Trail:AT Trail from the parking lot on Route 4
Trail Conditions: Light snow over soft ground down low; mostly frozen above 2500 feet but easy to break through thin crust of ice on muddy parts of trail (plenty of that); solid and icy above about 3,000 ft. No serious blowdown or trail problems.
Equipment: Microspikes or other traction definitely needed for this one. And obviously the usual late fall/early winter layers.
Comments: Spectacular day for a hike. We had the trail to ourselves. Views were almost unlimited. Very windy on the long ridge. The Saddleback trail is a funny one--lots of walking and not much ascent, then you hit that ridge after the big pond and up you go. That is followed by a series of false peaks which were a tad vexing. We pictured a mellow ridge walk between Saddleback and the Horn. NOT. It was work at both ends. Fantastic snow sculpting on every surface. All in all, could not have been any better.
Numbers 94 and 95 of the 115 for me. YEAH!
