Date of Hike: Monday 6/23
Trail Conditions: muddy in the vicinity of Sandy Stream Pond. Fine elsewhere. No blowdowns.
Special Equipment Required: bug dope! Trekking poles useful on the boulders. Shorty gaiters to help keep the mud at bay. Cameras and binocs to moose watch on Sandy Stream Pond.
Comments: the Katahdin summit was in the clouds when we arrived on the summit, but was mostly in the clear by the time we descended. A cool breeze on top helped keep the bugs off us. Afterward we cooled off with a quick dip at Togue Pond - the water temp was nice.
Day three of a MOAC trip to the Baxter area to hike, kayak and raft the Penobscot River. Seven of our original 20-person group did the hike today - thanks to Pat, Natalie, Foster, Marty, Kathy, and Nancy!
