At one time or another, we had hit most of the trails out of Ferncroft, but had never actually gone to Square Ledge.We thought it was time to check out another from the 52WAV list and see what we had been missing.
We made good time up the Old Mast Road to the four way, getting there in about an hour. From there we continued straight ahead on the square ledge trail. We encountered a good amount of muddy and wet places, and the trail was less used than others in the area. Unfortunately the day was overcast and foggy. The weather forecast had promised early clearing, but it wasn't to be.At length we approached Square Ledge itself and were met by some very imposing granite cliffs.
We were still hoping that the fog would lift magically when we got to the viewpoints on the Ledge, but instead we got wonderful views of fog and clouds, with the occassional glimpse of daylight and land below
After awhile we decided to give up waiting and go on our way continuing on the Square Ledge Trail. A little further on, a lookback gave us a view of the Ledge.
The square Ledge Trail became less used, tighter, and in some areas resembled a bushwack. We stayed on it until we reached the junction with the Walden . Our plan had been to zip up to Passaconaway summit, but at this point the weather had still not cleared, so we thought, "why bother for no view" Continuing on we took the Dicey Mill back to our starting point.
We all know we can't have perfect conditions every time out, but it was clear to us that, on a good day,the view from Square Ledge is probably spectacular. So we will go there again, another time.
