Tecumseh via Mt Tecumseh Trail, 19 Jan 2009

Great trail conditions on a mostly sunny and warm day.

Mt tecumseh trail comfortably packed. Sosman similarly well-broken from the top of the lifts to the summit. No new tracks beyond the summit since Sunday's snowfall, but trail had been broken before then and travel looks easy.

Trail conditions: lightly-packed powder the whole way. Downhill skiers have packed and scraped the usual section above the signed viewpoint, but there was no ice.

No blowdowns, no stream crossings of note. Snow not very deep yet: blazes at eye level and overhead branches barely brushed my hat. Off-trail it was possible to sink to mid-thigh (mid-calf with snowshoes, even with tails on: top layer is very light powder).

Equipment: Most of trail bare-bootable with ease.
Light traction and/or poles helpful on the obviously-skied-on section, and for climbing the relatively steep summit cone. Snowshoes were the consensus choice of footwear on these sections.

Special cautions: watch for downhill skiers and snowboarders on the hiking trail: the ones I saw had remarkably limited skills.

If we don't get much new snow, expect the skied-on section to turn icy with continued use.
