trails: middlesex trail, bob kemp trail, white rock trail, skyline trail, worcester mountain trail

conditions: both trailheads had rough access roads (mountain road for worcester mountail trail and north bear swamp road for middlesex trail). they can be driven with little issue in a passenger car if care is used. for the most part the trails were wet today. some running water and mud on middlesex trail with slippery ledges higher up and on the bob kemp trail. more of the same up to hunger where the exposed ledge was relatively dry. some real greasy ledges between the open summit of hunger and its north peak. wet trail with stretches of mud up to putnam with numerous false summits along the way. over the rest of the worcester range the going was generally wet and rugged, but decent with some mud in the cols and slippery ledge at times. signs of recent work removing blowdowns and brushing. coming off of worcester we had dry ledge until the rain hit which made everything a bit slick. lots of running water and wet trail followed as we were hit by a long down pour for much of the descent which swelled up the small drainages and ran heavily down the trail. some long muddy stretches in the lower section of the trail before the trailhead. bug were not much of an issue, but some deer/horse flies were annoying at times. water crossings were up a bit early, but could be crossed without a problem. the heavy afternoon rain quickly brought them up and even the small drainages require stepping in water on the way out.

equipment: nothing in particular.

comments: a nice and surprisingly rugged traverse. great open ledge walking on white rock and hunger and good views despite the haze. some nice viewpoints along the rest of the route and on worcester mountain as well. hot and muggy until the heavy afternoon rain. thanks to jeremy for a good hike.
