    VT 200 H ventures

Saturday d ritter and I headed over to VT for some wacks to a few 200 H peaks. First on our agenda was Rochester Mtn. Our approach was from the height of land at Rochester Gap. After working our way through the briar filled cut area at the base of the ridge we hit upon an old atv track the...

    dRitter NH 200H

This past Friday I was lucky to join Damon, Jim C., and Carl C. on Howe peak for Damon's finish of the NH 200H. We approached via the Shelburne Trail, then a bushwack along the old abandoned southerly end of the Kenduskeak Trail. We hit snow at about 2000', maybe 2-3" all the way to the summit...

    NE Paugus

A nice NH300H peak. A reasonably straight forward wack off the Bolles Trail. Some open moss covered ledges at the top offer great views of Chocura, Moats and Kearsarge.

    NH 200 H Finish

On a spectacular day in Pittsburg, I was fortunate to finish the NH 200 H with great companions, great weather, and some truly great views. I want to thank Damon and Al for slowing their normal pace so that I could stay with them. We planned on two peaks, hoped for 3, but ended up getting all 4...

    Owl's Cliff

Another NH 200 Highest venture to a really nice little peak. I first visited Owl's Cliff in 1992, the views were better then because the trees were much smaller! It was hot, hot, hot yesterday, but there were no bugs and no humidity. We used the Brunel Trail, this trail is over 80 years old and...

    Howe Peak

Last Saturday I able to do some of my favorite things all in one trip! I got to trail hike on a seldom used trail, the Shelburn Trail, I didn't see anyone else, except for Eric, the entire day. I got to bushwack, which I love to do. I got a NH 200 Highest Peak, and best of all I got to follow a...

    M. Cannonball & NW Cannon

Jim C and I will be hiking these two peaks Thursday. These peaks are on the most obscure list of all, the list of delisted peaks! Rumor has it (thanks Roy) that M. Cannonball actually has one of Ray Chaput's signs on the summit. That alone makes it worth the trip! We will then travel over to...

    Waterville Valley Adventures

Jim C., my son, Dan, and I had a wonderful hike/wack in Waterville Valley yesterday. We hiked to some very seldom visited peaks, found a "secret" trail, that led to an unknown peak, all in all, it was a great day in the woods. This trip had trail hiking, and a large dose of bushwacking thrown in...

    Subcompact digital camera

Does anyone have suggestions for a subcompact digital camera that has a wide angle lens? What are some good ones, and what ones should be avoided. Many thanks.

    Two "Lost" Trails Found

This month's issue of Backpacker has a story about 8 "lost" trails, two of which are here in New England. The Adams Slide Trail, and the North Slide Trail on OJI are featured, thanks to Michael Lanza no doubt. Be ready for lots of company on these "lost" trails in the future.

    East Hale

This is one of those peaks I've been meaning to climb for more than 20 years, I first heard of it when I got my original 3k list in the early 80's, it's been dropped from the list because of col depth. It's definitely not a popular destination. But I can honestly say that in over 25 years of...

    NH 3k on Wednesday

Anyone interested in a NH3k trail/bw hike to a peak with views on this Wednesday let me know. This peak is a bit off the beaten track, but well worth the effort.

    The "New" Maine woods

Very interesting reading for all those interested in Roxanne's plans. Check out http://www.nytimes.com/2006/11/07/us/07maine.html?ex=116566800&en=4aa7521657fff56b&ei=5070&emc=eta1

Big Squaw, the end of a journey

What a great mountain for me to finish my quest for the New England 3ks!. It was what I consider to be a "typical" western ME day, with a mix of clouds, sun and a bit of rain also. I was delighted to be accompanied on the trip with my son, Dan, his friend Jenn, and my long time hiking friend...

    Big Squaw

If you happen to find yourself in Greenville on Saturday, join me and my son as I finally, after 25 years of trying, finish the New England 3ks! I've been told that there are great Views From The Top.

    Turners-The Owl

For the second time in a week, I was fortunate to be able to go hiking in BSP with my best friend and hiking partner, my son Dan. It was a great pleasure to be with him as I did my last 7 3k peaks in the park. On Thursday we did N. Turner which is a bushwack peak that has a totally open summit...

    Travelers and Doubletop

On Saturday my son and I did the Travelers. This is definitely one of the nicest loop hikes I've ever done. First, you have the remote setting in the northern part of BSP. Second, because of the remoteness there are not a lot of other hikers around. Third, the peaks are drop dead gorgeous! Open...

    South Big Spencer

This peak is a typical ME 3k peak, in that we took four different lumber company roads, each one worse than the one before it, to get to the base of the peak. I was joined by Jim C., Onestep, mhrsebago, and Nate. We left Greenville at 6 am and it took us 2 hours of driving over dirt roads to...

    Crispo Peak-Leave No Stragglers

Yesterday, Jim C. and I did two ME 3k peaks, Number 6 Mountain and S. Number 6 Mountain. S. Number 6 Mountain is better known as Crispo Peak, in honor of Dennis Crispo. Back in 1988, this peak had a listed elevation of 2991, Dennis put a register on the summit thinking it was close enough that...
