I am going to London in May and I have a couple weeks vacation to burn. I have been thinking that there must be some backpacking opportunities within reach of a train ride. I'd like to see some of the idyllic countryside, but an Internet search of 'backpacking in Europe' leads me to activities that are not 'backpacking' at all, at least as we in the US know it. I have a tent and everything I need to thru-hike anywhere, indefinitely. Where should I go? I am not interested in spending money but I am open to any suggestions and/or advice that anyone may have. Thanks!

Search on "wilderness camping" (and the region).

From what I have read, most of the multi-day hiking in Europe tends to use huts and inns rather than backcountry camping.

Very different than "mountains" but absolutely spectacular. I was skeptical about hiking in the moor but I can't wait to return. It's so expansive and untouched for miles and miles. We spent days hiking there and saw a few people who were back packing across. There are also many trails though farm land, one of which goes from the West coast to the East coast. You travel through private land and locals are very helpful and welcoming, they love to chat you up.
You could always go North from London to Scotland where there are mountains.

If you would like to see pictures PM me and I can send you the link. they include London as well.
