Keep in mind how incredibly dense the north woods are. The military uses this area for their highly intensive SERE training. And I'll never forget the Lear Jet that crashed on its way to Lebanon NH in 1996 and wasn't found until 3 years later in spite of one of the biggest aerial searches in New...
Did the classic Falling Waters, Franconia Ridge, Greenleaf, Old Bridle Path loop. Although it never rained, the trails were very wet. Falling Waters was even wetter than usual, making for a rather slippery go at points. (First time I've been up the trail since Irene and I assume the heavily...
A great hike with an expectedly large amount of new snow. Ravine Rd. is still closed but almost completely snow free so it was a very quick walk to the trailhead. Gorge Brook was snow-free for only the first few tenths of a mile and then a couple of inches of powder rapidly grew to as much as...
A lovely midweek hike during which we saw not a single soul! Webster-Jackson was obviously quite slushy recently and people snowshoed (and dogs walked) through it, so it now consists of perfectly frozen snowshoe tracks and paw prints! A little rough for the short bit to the Elephant Head cutoff...
Hmmm, interesting thought. I don't know if we've ever discussed that. I'll bring it up with our committee, although I suspect it'll be tough to find the resources to make this happen.

Greetings, folks! Along with another victim...er...volunteer, I'm trying to fill Mohamed's big shoes and run the AMC Boston Chapter's Hiking and Backpacking Committee's winter program. This is a program we run every year that's designed for three-season hikers who want to expand into the winter...
Howdy folks. I'm doing a backpack with 4-5 other folks this weekend. The plan is to do the Carters over two lazy days by hiking up Nineteen Mile Brook/Carter Dome, dropping packs in Zeta Pass, bagging Carter Dome (and Mt. Hight) then returning to Zeta Pass and finding a place to camp that's 1)...
I'd avoid a -20 bag at this time of year. I was there on the last weekend of winter last year but having planned on staying at Crag Camp, I bought my -20 bag. We then ran into the Gray Knob caretaker, who we knew from a previous trip, and he encouraged us to stay at Gray Knob. It was below 40 so...
I believe you're correct, Dave. I was just up there Sat., coming from the opposite direction and D and E are both quite distinct little knobs. I don't see a knob in this picture so suspect E is out of sight farther along the ridge.
Thanks for the advice, all! I ended up deciding that the 2.8 miles down Rt. 16 at the end was worth avoiding the doubling back along the ridge. So I started up 19 Mile Brook and then caught Wildcat Ridge. Piece of cake until Wildcat A (although someone had missed the left turn and a bunch of...
I'm planning on bagging the Wildcats this weekend. I've done them twice in the summer via the standard Wildcat Ridge/Nineteen Mile Brook route. From poking around the bulletin board and trail conditions, it looks like in the winter a lot of people just take the Polecat ski trail to Wildcat D...
I was hiking out Sawyer River Rd. yesterday afternoon about 4 when we were passed by a convoy of 4-5 snowmobiles, a couple of which had flashing lights so were presumably police/emergency vehicles. One of the snowmobiles was pulling a sled with someone on it. Their face was covered (I assume to...
