Incredibly odd development in the Geraldine Largay case

Keep in mind how incredibly dense the north woods are. The military uses this area for their highly intensive SERE training. And I'll never forget the Lear Jet that crashed on its way to Lebanon NH in 1996 and wasn't found until 3 years later in spite of one of the biggest aerial searches in New...

    Lincoln and Lafayette - June 28, 2012

Did the classic Falling Waters, Franconia Ridge, Greenleaf, Old Bridle Path loop. Although it never rained, the trails were very wet. Falling Waters was even wetter than usual, making for a rather slippery go at points. (First time I've been up the trail since Irene and I assume the heavily...

Moosilauke via Gorge Brook - 4/10/2012

A great hike with an expectedly large amount of new snow. Ravine Rd. is still closed but almost completely snow free so it was a very quick walk to the trailhead. Gorge Brook was snow-free for only the first few tenths of a mile and then a couple of inches of powder rapidly grew to as much as...

    Winter's Back!

I can attest to this. Did Moosilauke via Gorge Brook yesterday and was surprised to find 8-10" of new snow on the top half of the trail.

    Mt. Jackson via Webster-Jackson - 1-25-2012

A lovely midweek hike during which we saw not a single soul! Webster-Jackson was obviously quite slushy recently and people snowshoed (and dogs walked) through it, so it now consists of perfectly frozen snowshoe tracks and paw prints! A little rough for the short bit to the Elephant Head cutoff...

Annual Winter Hiking and Backpacking Program

Hmmm, interesting thought. I don't know if we've ever discussed that. I'll bring it up with our committee, although I suspect it'll be tough to find the resources to make this happen. K

Annual Winter Hiking and Backpacking Program

Greetings, folks! Along with another victim...er...volunteer, I'm trying to fill Mohamed's big shoes and run the AMC Boston Chapter's Hiking and Backpacking Committee's winter program. This is a program we run every year that's designed for three-season hikers who want to expand into the winter...

    Camping Advice on Carter-Moriah

Hmm, I've never noticed water there before. Mind you, I haven't been in Zeta Pass outside of winter in about five years!

    Camping Advice on Carter-Moriah

Howdy folks. I'm doing a backpack with 4-5 other folks this weekend. The plan is to do the Carters over two lazy days by hiking up Nineteen Mile Brook/Carter Dome, dropping packs in Zeta Pass, bagging Carter Dome (and Mt. Hight) then returning to Zeta Pass and finding a place to camp that's 1)...

    Internal temperature inside Gray Knob?

I'd avoid a -20 bag at this time of year. I was there on the last weekend of winter last year but having planned on staying at Crag Camp, I bought my -20 bag. We then ran into the Gray Knob caretaker, who we knew from a previous trip, and he encouraged us to stay at Gray Knob. It was below 40 so...

what peak is this? Wildcat E?

I believe you're correct, Dave. I was just up there Sat., coming from the opposite direction and D and E are both quite distinct little knobs. I don't see a knob in this picture so suspect E is out of sight farther along the ridge.

    Wildcats in winter

Thanks for the advice, all! I ended up deciding that the 2.8 miles down Rt. 16 at the end was worth avoiding the doubling back along the ridge. So I started up 19 Mile Brook and then caught Wildcat Ridge. Piece of cake until Wildcat A (although someone had missed the left turn and a bunch of...

    Wildcats in winter

I'm planning on bagging the Wildcats this weekend. I've done them twice in the summer via the standard Wildcat Ridge/Nineteen Mile Brook route. From poking around the bulletin board and trail conditions, it looks like in the winter a lot of people just take the Polecat ski trail to Wildcat D...

    Accident up Sawyer River Rd.?

I was hiking out Sawyer River Rd. yesterday afternoon about 4 when we were passed by a convoy of 4-5 snowmobiles, a couple of which had flashing lights so were presumably police/emergency vehicles. One of the snowmobiles was pulling a sled with someone on it. Their face was covered (I assume to...

    WMNF Campgrounds in Winter?

Thanks, Doug. I'll give them a call. They may have that board at Exit 32 lit up in the winter, which would let me know which ones are open. K

    WMNF Campgrounds in Winter?

I did a quick search and didn't see anything on this so hopefully I'm not repeat-posting... I'm leading a couple of day hikes this weekend and was just planning on throw my winter tent up at one of the WMNF campgrounds on the Kanc but just realized that I've never noticed whether or not those...

Lost Hiker on Mt Lafayette - FOUND!

Apparently he was in his sleeping bag with "gloves on his feet and frostbite on his body" according to the latest A.P. press release (http://www.boston.com/news/local/new_hampshire/articles/2007/01/22/search_continues_for_lost_hiker/). Hopefully we'll get some more details prior to Mohamed's...

Lost Hiker on Mt Lafayette - FOUND!

Thank goodness for a good ending! It was sounding a tad grim there, esp. when they found equipment without finding the person. The news report said they found him "on that mountain" so it'll be interesting to see where he actually was (since I suspect they could be using "on that mountain" to...

    Found: Dog booties

If anyone was hiking with a dog on the Twinway/Bondcliff trails, got back to the car and discovered that Rover only had one bootie left, we found three of them on those trails on Sun. If you'd like them back, send me an email at [email protected] and I'll get them back to you somehow.
