    What breed of dog?

poodle Believe it or not, my buddy takes his miniature poodle hiking with us every weekend. She is one tough b. She powers up hills and he can scoop her up and carry her when needed. She is about 1 foot tall and weighs maybe 10 lbs. I never thought I would hold a mini poodle in such high...

stellar snowshoes Stellar Snowhoes: the cramp ons bent in five minutes on mine and my wifes. They went straight back and all I was out was the shipping.

    Pillow for Backpacking?

thermarest bone here I like the thermarest bone. It's 4 oz with the soft cover. Take the cover off and it's only 2.5 oz; then put your hat under your face. That's my set up.

Berry picker shot by bear hunter in VT

BEUCS - you win the award for intolerence. I'm sorry you think it sucks - but hunters have the right to hunt - and it is very necessary. Let's not trample others rights because of one bad apple. Should we all not drive because some people drive drunk and kill people? That sucks too.

    Sleeping Pad Chair Question

1/2 lb That's about 1/2 lb heavier than a prolite 3 plus thermarest chair sling. If you are weight savy a 1/2 pound might as well be a ton. I'll gladly stuff my pad into the sling to save 1/2 lb. And I always bring my chair sling because of my aching back. I only wish someone sold a...

    Furthest below your bag's rating?

me too I too, find myself a little chilly whenever I am at a bags comfort rating. If its zero degrees and I'm in my zero bag, I'm a little cool. Same thing with my 32 degree bag at 32 degrees. Some people just "sleep cold" and I guess we fit in that category. I guess it has to do with...

    Furthest below your bag's rating?

In the spirit of all this "best and worst" posting, and the fact that it's been so hot, I though I'd start a thread about the coldest we've all been. I know that being 5 degrees below your bags temp rating can be slightly chilly and being 15 degrees below can be darn cold. I'll start by...

leki & antishock = happy camper I've gone thru a few sets of poles and I'll tell you about the NEXT set I'll buy: they will be leki brand because of the remarkable customer service described on this and other boards. the polarguards

ray way If you want some good data and opinions on the subject, check out ray Jardine's site. He has a lot to say about it, but basically he says delta is a sham, and 3-D is actually the best for durability etc. I for one was dissapointed with a 3-D bag I owned, and traded it in for a 650...

    How good are cheap tents?

Coleman You are MUCH better off with a Coleman than a store brand or off brand. Coleman, while not really for UL backpackers, still makes high quality products. I have a Cimmeron dome tent of theirs and its great for car camping. I also have a BPing tent of theirs that I use when my wife...

    sleeping bag?

on a budget I am always on a budget. I found a great summer bag for almost nothin'. I've used it down to the mid 30s with some good long johns. Its rated to 50, but I think 45 is more acurate. How big a boy ara ya? Cause it's cut kind of tight. I'm 5'9" and 170 lbs and it is a nice snug...

    New hiking poles?

If you're making fun of me I really don't appreciate it. If you can't contribute something constructive then don't contribute. Sarcasm is not contributing unless you explain yourself, which you haven't.

    New hiking poles?

I belive that there is considerable advantage in using anti-shock poles. I think you should spend the extra money for this feature. I've tried antishock poles side by side with non anti-shock and you wouldn't believe the difference when going down hill. They REALLY take the strain off the knees.
