    New Old route up Santanoni?

I am planning a day trip to the Tahawus Road trailheads in 2 days after several years' absence. I remember reading a few years ago about the possibility of the reopening of the original route up Santanoni from the Bradley Pond trail well before you get to the "standard" route up via Times...

    Wacky Peakbagging

I read once of an individual who claimed to have urinated on the summit of each of the 48, and another individual who kissed a girl (it may have been a different girl for each) at each of the summits. I seem to remember getting these stories form one of the Waterman books.

How much snow did you get...and a big storm next week

Close to two inches at low elevation at my home in East Middlebury, VT. Its all gone, except for what my kids made into a snowman.

    Funny Questions

Years ago, while working in Yellowstone Park: "What is that white stuff on the mountains? Sand?" Or the infamous question, probably an urban legend: "When do the Elk turn into Moose?

    Cairn field near Jamaica, Vermont

There is often a much more limited "cairn garden" in the Mad River, just south of Irasville on Rt. 100. I had always assumed that it was an artistic statement by the property owner, rather than a memorial (which probably gets at least partially wiped out every srping anyways).

    Coleman fuel question

Another use for old Coleman fuel (again, ONLY OUTSIDE!!!!) is that it is good for removing old klister from cross-country skis.

New Wilderness in the Whites killed in Washington

Compromise on Wilderness Bill? In today's Burlington Free Press there was an article mentioning that a compromise on the bill had been reached in which the new Wilderness acreage in VT had been decreased. There is some question now as to whether or not the bill can be passed before the end of...

New Wilderness in the Whites killed in Washington

If I understand the politics of this correctly (and I may not - I read an article about it in the morning paper while chasing kids around the house and making four different breakfasts for four people) Bernie killed it because he wanted more protection, not less. He wanted the bill to include...

Possible Wild Boar Sightning Along I-91 Near White River VT

About 25 years ago, a wild boar was either seen, or perhaps even shot (it was a long time ago, and the details fad from my memory) in the Hanover, NH, Norwich VT. area ( I suppose boars can cross bridges). At the time, it was suspected that the boar had escaped from Corbin Park. There was a...

    Unplanned bivy

Wow- This thread has been up here for a while, and there are no responses! Either we are all very well-prepared hikers, or we are unwilling to admit to our failures to "the press"...

    Beechnuts and black bears

Any botanists out there know why there is such an abundance of beech nuts this particular year? I have a beech in my yard which has NEVER yielded any nuts until this year (been in the house 14 years). No bears yet, however.

    Trap Dike Conditions?

Anybody been up the Trap Dike recently? I am considering going for it on Labor Day, and was curious as to its current state of wetness.

    Trekking in Peru

I travelled in Peru last summer, although did not have the opportunity to do any real trekking. My hosts, who were native Peruvians, felt that Peru was now mostly safe, other that some remote pockets where the remnants of the Shining Path insurgents were basically reduced to drug runners...

    Mount Wilson in Colorado

Culebra, another Colorado 14'er, but in the Sangre de Cristo range, has had difficult access issues for years as well. In the case of Culebra, however, it is entirely on private property.

What have you found in the woods?

OK, now here's a weird one.... While running on some trails at the outskirts of my town I came upon what appeared to be complete sets of men's and women's clothing (I didn't dig through the stack to check to check every last piece, but very obvious examples of the underwear of both sexes were...

    Mountain biking on Cape Cod

There is some decent single and double-track stuff which is not too horribly sandy off of the section of the rail trail just past Center Harwich on the way to Chatham. Nothing special, but not bad either if you are in the area.

    Calling all Gypsy Moth Experts!!!

I've found that the wasp and hornet killing spray, made to shoot over long distances for obvious reasons, ( which you can buy at any hardware store) very conveniently kills off the tent caterpillar nests in branches which are hard to reach. I don't know what the active ingredient is, and I...

What's the oldest piece of gear you own and still use?

1977 External Frame Kelty pack. Its still the most comfortable pack I've found for hauling my skis up to Tuckerman's ravine, and that combined with my 195 cm skis and graying hair give me a hopelessly retro look..

Thanks for the Desktop (Post yours if you wish!!)

Summitpost is an excellent site to download mountain shots for personal use. I'm looking at a wonderful picture of K2 taken from that site as my current desktop, but will not share it due to aforementioned copyright issues

    Easiest Hike that you thought.....

I was actually kind of surprised by Allen. Most of the approach was pretty flat, and the route was easy to follow after the post-Floyd shakedown. I guess I got psyched out by the Richard Bern sagas of a few years ago.
