    TNF Venture jacket

Has anyone had any experience with the North Face Venture jacket? it fits my price range nicely and seems to be just as good as those double the price. i'd be using it mostly for 3-season use, but plan to do some light winter hiking as well. thought it might layer well and provide decent...

    Water filter recommendations

i also have the MSR miniworks ex and its pretty nice. if you're an ultra-lighter you might complain that its on the heavy side, but i dont mind cuz its a good piece of gear. i've used it on about 5 trips or so and dont have any complaints so far and would reccommend it.

my computer and internet have been down so i havent been able to respond latley, but i was thinking either northern/central PA. i dont want to get too far south because it ends up being quite a drive for a weekend trip since i live in Rochester, NY. i did read up on a few trails (west rim and...

The North Face Particle 13 tent

i havent had any experience with the tent, but i did get to check it out at a gear shop in NYC and its huge for a solo tent. the backpacker gear guide said its big enough for 2 people, which i think is true, although it would be a bit of a squeeze. it looked like a pretty solid design.

    Bear proof cannister

i have the Bear Vault model. i havent had a chance to use it but am planning a high peaks trip where it will be required, but i have a hard enough time opening it and i have thumbs. it really only adds a little over 2 pounds, but a quarentee that no food will be lost, i think its worth the...

    Golite trig/hut

VFTT'opr - the models are from Golite and are called the Trig and the Hut. they can be found on Golite.com, their web site. i had read similar reviews after posting. i think now, i might consider either a tarp tent, or something similar to what you had mentioned. i was thinking the golite lair...

    going solo

i too am going to be doing a solo trip. next weekend to be exact. this thread has provided some excellent insight. i'm a little unnerved, but overall i think i'm ready. i plan on doing a lot of writing and hopefully it will give me a great chance for self reflection. i'm hoping that this will be...

    Harriman State Park

i didnt mean to confuse anyone, i didnt mean last hike as in being killed. i'm certainly not worried about that, i meant as in a bad experience. as for hiking on L.I. i havent found much and i've been to fire island, i rather have woods to hike in. i've already worked out the transportation...

    Harriman State Park

i'm trying to plan around mid april and/or early may given weather conditions. is this a good/bad time to go to avoid crowds? i wasnt really planning to stay at any lean-to's so that shouldnt be a problem. i am however, planning on avoiding any and all pricks that might be out. how is the area...

    Harriman State Park

i'm not gonna be taking a car, so break in's arent really of any concern to me. i was more curious about maybe overnighters being harassed or anything along those lines. personally i'm not too worried, but i need to reassure the old man. also, are there many campsites along the trails, or does...

    Harriman State Park

one more quick question for now, has there been any confirmed crime reports in the park other than car break ins if even that? i ask cuz i'm planning a solo trip when it gets a little warmer before i go home and my pop is a little wary of me going alone (i'm 18, which seems old enough to me).
