    Seeking Advice Concerning Nepal Trek

I am considering doing a trek in Nepal this fall, perhaps Everest Base Camp. I would appreciate any advice on this trek versus other treks. Also, I would appreciate thoughts on whether I should go with an established outfitter. If so, can you recommend a particular outfitter? I may be going solo...

    North Moat 11/25

The trail above Diana's Bath was unbroken to the summit with about 15 inches of wet, heavy snow that made for slow going in snowshoes. We lost the trail for a bit below the junction with the Red Ridge trail and wondered around for a while, so I apologize for those who follow us. No wind until...

Monroe, Washington, Isolation 4/9/11 Part I

Great report and nice photos. I was there Saturday as well and went up Ammo for a short while and then up Monroe Brook Ravine directly to the summit of Monroe. As you will see by the attached photos, it makes a great snow climb in the right conditions.

    Pikes Peak Ascent 8/15/09

Great race report. I did the uphill race in 1979 at age 25 and ran 2:45. My brother and I spent ten days there before the race and felt well acclimated. When I returned to sea level in Maine I felt like superman for a week in my runs before my hematocrit/hemoglobin returned to normal. It gave me...

    Subcompact digital camera

I forgot to mention that when you see a price that low, it's probably "grey market" meaning made for foreign sale. That probably means no US warranty from Canon. The seller gives its own warranty. Good luck on that.

Stay away from Broadway Photo. I unfortunately placed an order with them seduced by the low price and then did my research on them. Check out their rating on http://www.resellerratings.com/store/Broadway_Photo After I saw the comments about them, I was able to cancel the order. However, I then...

I have the Canon SD800 and like it. Here is a link to a discussion of it. I bought it from Amazon where you see a lot of user reviews. http://www.kenrockwell.com/canon/sd800.htm

    Expose Yourself - Saturday 6/16/2007

A fellow skied the Headwall in Tux nude last spring and got a ticket from the Forest Service for public nudity. Photos are in this link to the Time for Tuckerman web site. Scroll down for a proud photo of the ticket. http://timefortuckerman.com/forums/showthread.php?t=6447&highlight=nude

    Gatorade question

When I went Rim to Rim to Rim over two days in the Grand Canyon last May in 100 degree heat I found myself drinking about a liter and a half of water per hour which I supplemented with Endurolyte electrolyte tablets from Hammer Nutrition. That seemed to work great and I had no cramping. I prefer...

    Grand Canyon Double Crossing

I agree that the Grand Canyon Rim to Rim to Rim is an amazing hike. My brother and I did it twice last year. In May we did it as a two day trip, overnighting at the North Rim Lodge. In November we did the one day roundtrip. After the May trip we climbed Mt. Humphrey's on the third day. Someone...

Grand Canyon Rim to Rim to Rim 11/5/06

They have a lot of rescues of unprepared hikers. The Bright Angel trailhead is right off the busy Rim Trail. The easy (downhill) part comes first. The temperature rises during the descent. Folks find themselves with insufficient water and physical reserves to make it back up.

Grand Canyon Rim to Rim to Rim 11/5/06

We did not notify any rangers. I had read it was official policy to discourage the trips, but had spoken to a ranger when we did our two day Rim to Rim to Rim and he didn't seem to have any problem with the one or two day trips. I had also read it suggested that one technically needs a...

Grand Canyon Rim to Rim to Rim 11/5/06

Bikehikeskifish: Concerning your question about the Pearl Izumi leg warmers, I checked with my brother who was the one wearing them. He said he wore them with loose shorts since he knew he would be taking them off early in the hike and just wanted something to keep his legs warm on the walk...

Grand Canyon Rim to Rim to Rim 11/5/06

My brother Steve and I completed a double crossing of the Grand Canyon, commonly know as Rim to Rim to Rim, on November 5, covering the 42 mile roundtrip from the South Rim to the North Rim and back in 15.5 hours. Our route was a descent of the South Kaibab trail, which begins at 7,260 feet...

    Pemi Loop 8/13/06

I had wanted to try a one-day Pemi loop this summer, but the days I could go had all been too hot and/or with risk of thunderstorms. This weekend's unseasonable temps seemed just the ticket to do it in cool conditions with plenty of daylight. I considered driving over to Lincoln to stay in a...

how many gel packs? - moved from Q&A

I use gel from Hammer Products and take a packet every 45 minutes or so. Hammer stuff was designed for triathletes and cyclists who need calories on the go that are readily absorbed. If you believe the Hammer literature, once you get beyond two hours of exercise, you need something with protein...
