Jesse Young Rd. in Pittsburg, NH...open?

Lodging for northern 3000 footers I stayed here when I was doing the peaks along the border. I found the price acceptable, the food more than acceptable and the people wonderful. Sportsmans Lodge and Cabins - www.sportman.com 1355 Diamond Pond Rd, Stewartstown - (603) 237-5211

    group bushwhacking ethics

A classic "herd path" in NH The famous "Castle Mountain Expressway" from roughly the col with Sugarloaf to the summit of Castle, perhaps half a mile, about three feet wide. I was (if I recall correctly) the second person to sign the register (placed by John Swanson several years before) and...

Why I "don't" post trip reports

Trip reports not posted because 1. I type terribly and don't like looking even more illiterate than I already am. 2. There are lots of good trip reports on trailed hikes 3. There aren't many bushwhackers out there; happy to respond to queries.

Middle Jay? North Jay? NE Glastenbury? N Glastenbury?

Glastonbury Peaks I recall all but one of the many Glastonbury's was trailed but it is a bit of challenge to the intrepid 4wd adventurer to get vehicles suitably spotted to get the 3 more southern peaks in one hike.

    hancocks, clockwise or counterclockwise?

    S. Hancock vs. North Long ago recollection: The steep section of S. Hancock is shorter and sandier than the N. Hancock steep bit. Folks who have trouble with very steep descents and bad knees (like me) usually will go up the N. Peak and down the S. to minimize the pain. In winter, the...

    Anyone good with rocks?

kyanite inclusions? General explanation: Most of the rocks in the White Mountains are what is referred to as igneous or metamorphic rocks; ones that have been melted or almost melted and then cooled over a long period of time. Our typical granite (and the various varieties of granite that...

    Old Garfield Shelter

That actually clears up some questions The N-S connector with Garfield Trail can still be followed, albeit with some difficulty. The section from Garfiedl Pond to the Ridge Trail is well travelled but has some fairly grotty blowdowns on it and is both longer and mor euphill than shown on the...

    Peak Above the Nubble

bobandgeri Thanks very much, this is the route I had planned to follow. Love the maps, what was the source. My NH topos don't have 304A on them and have little river road stopping at the reservoir (or however it is spelled). thanks also to Raymond and albee. the route up the check-marked...

    Old Garfield Shelter

I've observed sawn wood (as in trimmed boards) on the N side of Garfield Pond near where the abandoned cut off reaches the clear area by the pond and presumed that was the site of the old shelter. But..when was the tower removed from Garfield and where was the Warden's cabin located?

Blue Ridge N Pk, Wolf, Wolf Cub... let the 'whackin begin!

Gordon Pond Peak once had a summit sign saying "Gordon", don't know when it became the Wolf Cub. The old At from Gordon Pond made a wet but open route to get close to the peak.

Cardigan, the long way - 3/31/2007

Beaver Ponds on Back 80 The Beaver Ponds on the USGS topo are NOT the Beaver Ponds you encountered recently, they have been abandoned for some time and are a mostly grassy meadow area now. There has been at least one relo to avoid the more recent beaver activity. Last time I was out there...

slow learner / no sweating in winter

Layering for beginners All good statements. I've been winter hiking since about 1990 and teaching beginners at hiking schools since 1992. It is almost always difficult to get beginners to dress lightly enough to avoid heavy sweating, it appears you need to realize you won't die before you can...

    Smarts Mtn

Road to dorchester not passable I can vouch for Roy's statement that the road from Lyme to dorchester is not passable, it more or less becomes too difficult for 4Runner slightly after passing the Ponds near the mid-way point.
