Avery & West Peaks, Fire Warden's trail, Stratton ME - 2-3-2010

The road up to the main water crossing at Stratton Pond is well packed in by snowmobiles. Snow shoes from the pond crossing to the peaks. The pond crossing had moving water in spots, but was easy to cross with snowshoes on. The trail is fairly well packed to the summits. A number of blow...

Has anyone been to the Jim Liberty cabin in recent weeks?

Has anyone been to the Jim Liberty cabin in recent weeks? Is it open or padlocked? This link shows it open, but I read that it has been closed and locked down in the past. http://www.fs.fed.us/r9/forests/white_mountain/recreation/hiking/onfoot_5-8.pdf Any info would be appreciated. Thanks!

    Welch-Dickey loop 12/22/2007

Conditions were grand, the snow was perfect for a snowshoe up Welch and Dickey mountains in Waterville valley. Was a warm day, and very calm on the summits. Plenty of snow for skiing as well as shoeing.

Solstice hike on Welch-Dickey loop 12/22/2007

Conditions were grand and the snow was perfect for a snowshoe up Welch and Dickey mountains in Waterville valley. A great hike, with a number of people on skis and snowshoes. 2 people were postholing with snowboards, but their tracks were covered up after a few crosses by people. This was my...

any avalanche issues on Welch-Dickey route?

Hi all! I haven't been on Welch Mountain before. Does anyone here that's been on the mountain think there may be avalanche possibilities because of all the snow we've had so far this late fall? I was planning on doing the Welch-Dickey route up the slabs on Saturday, and have never been there...

Crawford Notch to Zealand (I am not a monster!) 3/16-3/17/07

Our original plan was a 3-day 2-night hike, including a hike to Zealand hut from Crawford Notch the first day, then to Garfield shelter on day 2, then head out to Franconia Notch over Lafayette on Day 3. We knew to begin with that the snow was heading our way, and that the weather reports were...

    Saddleback and Horn over-nighter 3/03 & 3/04/2007

Our original planned hike was to spend 4 days and 3 nights going on the AT from Saddleback through the Crockers. We decided to cut this distance short because the amount of snow we hit on the far side of the Horn. We knew it would be deep snow through all but the peaks, so we ended up staying...

If at first you don't succeed, trudge trudge again (abraham ME, 3/11/2007)

This is a re-attempt TR for a trip this past sunday (3/11/07) on Mount Abraham in Maine. On 1/20/2007 I set out with a friend Pete at the trailhead of Mt Abraham. We were able to park our car right at the trailhead. yea! This was a cold day (-5 close to the summit, and 60+ mph winds). We...

any thoughts on water access on AT in Maine?

I am debating bringing a purifying device with me on a 4-day 3-night trip from saddleback through the crockers this weekend. I was wondering if anyone out there has done this trip in the winter before, and had any water access near Poplar Ridge and Spalding mountain leantos as well as at...

    Old Speck 02/23/2007

This past Friday was a great day for a hike in the Maine woods. Photos of the hike here: http://sopomedia.com/trips/2007/Old-Speck_02-23-2007/ I met John and Mark at the Eyebrow trail head outside of Newry Maine. At 9am it was 8 degrees out with blue skies and it was a tad bit windy. We were...

    Carrigain overnight 2/10-2/11

this was a trip with a friend John (an old Orono roommate and compsci dude) and myself. Photos are here: http://sopomedia.com/trips/2007/carrigain_02-2007/ We got started out of the parking lot at around 11:00am. This was a bit late, and I was to blame. I had some business and phone calls to...

    Lost hiker on Lafayette 1/20/2007

Has anyone heard more info on this hiker? It was brutally cold and windy in Maine this day, it may have been a little worse in NH. Sounds like he had camping gear and was able to make it through the night on Saturday, and used his cell phone Sunday morning. I haven't heard any other info...

Jefferson (#47), Garfield (#48), and the NH 4k list.

I finished my list of New Hampshire 4kers. All 48 done this year. The first, Mount Tom and Field, done Jan 29, 2006, and the last two done August 23, 2006 - 3 days before the first anniversary of my heart surgery. I feel very lucky to have set this goal for myself and to be able to have finished...

Bike & Hike - Isolation 7/30 (and other July peaks)

Sunday was an amazing day to be in the mountains. To keep up with trying to finish the NH 4kers this summer, I headed to Isolation for what was to be a great day. I decided to take the Glen Boulder trail to the Davis, Davis to Isolation, then back on the Rocky Branch trail (rt 13.3 miles not...

Bike & Hike - Kinsmans and Cannon, June 25, 2006

was a long day, but a good one. I was on the motor bike at 5:30a in drizzle and fog (had to stop twice for necessary espresso shots). By the time I got to NH it was sunny with blue skies, and I could tell the mountains were clear. Got on the trail at 9:10a. This included about 40 minutes of...

    Osceola, E. Osceola, Tecumseh 06-05-2006

Arrived at Osceola Trail at 7:50a with hopes of a clearing day for the summits, which unfortunately wasn't to be had (at least while I was on them :)). Still, a fine day to be in the mountains. A pleasant hike up the Osceola trail, slightly wet from previous rain. On the way up I ran into a...
