    Shadowy Creep Finishes The 48

Congrats, from someone who has been hiking since 1977 and is currently stuck at 35.

Highpoint: Arizona. Humphreys Peak (12,637 ft). September 18, 2011

Congrats on making it to the top of Humphreys Peak. :) I tried it myself this past June and had to turn back at around 12,200. I was hiking solo and did not give myself time to acclimate. I treated it like a White Mtn. day trip. I rented a car in Phoenix (1117'), drove north to the trailhead...

Nice report. I love that trail.

    Passaconaway via Dicey's Mill (30-Apr-2011)

Initial section was dry. Lower section from past the first steep rise to the intersection with Tom Wiggin Trail was very muddy and wet. Major stream crossing was difficult with water running high and fast. The climb out of the bowl was mostly dry until about 500 vertical feet below the...

Nice report. I remember you guys. I was up there that day with a friend; we came in via Champney Brook Trail.

    Relaxing on The Carters, 10/20/2009

Thanks for the report, Earl. :) I've often considered this route, but wondered about the difficulty of the direct whack back to the 19 Mile Brook Trailhead. For someone who hasn't bushwhacked much, how difficult do you think it is?

I believe it was Bob & Geri's group.

Stepping Between the Seasons -- North Twin Mountain (14-Oct-2009)

Petch, I did get to South Twin about two years ago. The views were clear and most excellent.

Not making a habit of Cabot?.......10/17/2009

Nice trip report and great pics. I sure missed a good hiking day. Cabot is on my to-do list, but I want to tackle it via Unknown Pond Trail from the northwest and hit the Horn and Bulge on the way.

Stepping Between the Seasons -- North Twin Mountain (14-Oct-2009)

Glenn: Great pic! I'll definitely have to go back to the Twins to take in those views. I'd been pushing the North Twin hike off for quite some time as it looked like a simple in/out peakbagging hike with little to show for the effort. Boy, was I mistaken! I saw someone's Facebook photo...

Stepping Between the Seasons -- North Twin Mountain (14-Oct-2009)

Thanks, TwinMom. :) It would have been a bit nicer if we had better views from the top, but the hike was well worth it. As far as being cold goes, it actually wasn't too bad except for the southerly viewpoint. That area caught all the wind. I also had enough fleece layers and extra gloves to...

Stepping Between the Seasons -- North Twin Mountain (14-Oct-2009)

And it was beautiful. Absolutely, breathtakingly beautiful. After hiking almost non-stop since the beginning, we stopped for a water, snack and layering break in an area I called the Cathedral of the Pines. Snow-covered branches formed holy arches over the trail mere feet from our heads. The...

Stepping Between the Seasons -- North Twin Mountain (14-Oct-2009)

I am no stranger to hiking in October. In 2003, three of us climbed Mounts Jackson and Webster. The weather that day was a brisk 25 degrees and though we got hit with snow flurries on both summits and during the descent, the impact had been minimal. In 2006, I soloed Carter Dome in late October...

Thanks. I'll keep that in mind.

    Hiking in Long Pants

Except for one memorable hike up Jefferson where I scorched my legs, I hike in long pants exclusively. I have a pair of zip-offs that do the trick nicely. (With the combination of shorts and mid-calf socks, I had rally stripes on my legs for a few months after the Jefferson hike.) I'm...
