    Dacks input needed

A stroll down the carriage road at the Gunks confirms the lasting visual impact of chalk even on the hard conglomerate rock of the Shawangunk ridge. Discoloration is visible there even immediately following the periodic chalk clean-up efforts. You may be right that few people will venture into...

Protocol for claiming spot at shelter

Tents in a lean-to More than a few times in the Adirondacks, I've come across parties that have pitched a tent in a sought-after lean-to, taking up every available millimeter of space. I usually tell the offenders this is against the rules, and drop strong hints the tent should be removed for...

Shasta: Avy Gulch / Green Butte Ridge / Guide Book?

I think that might be the trade-off with Green Butte Ridge; there isn't an established, sheltered camp spot on the route. Most people do it in a day from Bunny Flat. For solitude, consider the north side routes on the mountain. Here's a link to my trip report from earlier this summer...

Shasta: Avy Gulch / Green Butte Ridge / Guide Book?

I have several books covering Mt. Shasta. The best one for climbing routes is Climbing California's Fourteeners: The Route Guide to the Fifteen Highest Peaks (Paperback) by Stephen F. Porcella, Cameron M. Burns. It covers many routes on all sides of the mountain and has good photos. Green...

    Great Range Traverse in Winter?

The Gothics cables are often buried by snow or ice in winter. Most people do fine with an ice axe or ski pole on that section of the trail. It's really not that steep. I think the main issue on a winter Great Range traverse would be trail-breaking on less popular (e.g., Rooster Comb - Lower...

three night loop suggestions - adirondacks/catskills

3 Day Backpacks Pick up a copy of Bruce Wadsworth's excellent book on backpacking trips in the Adirondacks: An Adirondack Sampler. Great ideas for trips at all levels of difficulty in all areas of the Park. The Devil's Path in the Catskills is frequently done as a backpacking trip with a car...

Trailess South Ridge Ascent Of Mount Gould (13,005ft) Adventure

I'm glad I'm reading a first-hand account of your climb rather than a third-person report in Accidents in North American Mountaineering. Just imagine, John Muir did this kind of stuff all the time and he didn't even have the helmet! Looking forward to hearing about the rest of your trip.

Rainier update from the VFTT crew!

Recent Disappointment Cleaver Trip Report And for a very interesting recent trip report (7/30) by a solo woman climber on the D.C. route (with good photos) see: http://www.cascadeclimbers.com/threadz/showthreaded.php/Cat/0/Number/482876/an//page/0/vc/1

Pres. Traverse - S. end bivy spot suggestions

A follow-up to a question I posed a few weeks ago re. cab ride returns to Appalachia. (Thanks to all who responded.) The weather report is good, so I'm planning on hiking this Saturday, and taking the 9:40 a.m. shuttle from Highland Center back to my car at Appalachia on Sunday. The bunk room...

    Mount Shasta

Shasta alternative routes The Hotlum-Bolam ridge on the north side is a great moderate, non-technical climb. There are good campsites on flat benches at 10K. I was there in 2000 in early June and had the entire north side of the peak to myself for a few days. The crowds started showing up on...

    Trap Dike

Best to leave the skis at the Avalanche Camp lean-to and snowshoe up and over Avalanche Pass. That way you can descend the Lake Arnold trail and won't have to retrace your steps back over the pass to retrieve your skis. Of course, you'll have to carry snowshoes , but you'll need those anyway...

    Whitney via Mountaineers Route?

I soloed the Mountaineer's Route from a high camp at Upper Boy Scout Lake. Round-trip from the lake was about 8 hours, with an hour or so on the summit. Iceberg Lake is higher and is also a popular camping spot, although it was frozen solid when I was there in early June 2000. The route is...

Utah / Grand Canyon in April

My wife and I did this trip in mid April some years ago. It was a great time for the Grand Canyon because it was not too hot and the south rim was snow free by then. Zion was also snow free. Bryce, which is higher than Zion, only had snow at the highest elevations (about 9000 feet).

Dead Hiker Found On Friday Mtn?

Article Found From the Daily Freeman (5/15/01) SHANDAKEN - A local hiker was found dead Monday after an intensive eight-day search among the Catskill Mountains' highest peaks, state police at Ulster said. Schiram Biyani, 48, of Fishkill, was found at the bottom of a 30- to 50-foot cliff...

Dead Hiker Found On Friday Mtn?

I was also on one of the 3500 search teams. I recall hearing that his pack was nearby and open, so it was thought he survived the fall and died sometime later. He was from India, but I'm sorry to say I don't recall his name. Although it would not have mattered, he did not leave word with...

    North Face slide of Gothics

The True North slide is a snow climb, which I have done several times with only a mountaineering axe. The slope is relatively low angle, no steeper than the cable section of the trail. But you should be competent at self-arrest because you could go for a long ride in hard snow conditions...
