Kevin, that can't be a black racer - racers have smooth scales but this one's scales have "keels" down the middle.

I think it's a Water Snake, though I can't be sure it's not a Rat Snake.

We decided to venture out locally (in Rhode Island) to a new spot we'd been meaning to visit since it opened a couple of years ago - Tillinghast Pond Management Area in West Greenwich. I was hoping to find a few spring flowers but was totally unprepared for the amazing show we found! So great to have this almost in our back yard.

I was walking a property today in VT, and saw: ramps, violets (white, yellow an violet), wild ginger, hepatica, trout lily, spring beauty, wood anemone, toothwort, blue cohosh, foamflower, squirrel corn, and dutchmans' breeches, marsh marigold and hobblebush. Phew. I don't think I left any out.

Oh yeah, garlic mustard.:mad:

Found some trillium just starting to open up in the Sunapee Region today... ;)
