Aug 27,28 We are looking for a campsite near Lake Colden. We are hiking Marshall, Skylight, Gray, Redfield and Clif that weekend and wondering which is the best area to base camp. Also how is the bear activity in that area. I haven't seen to many postings on the site regarding bear problems lately. We will be using a canister and limiting cooking to freeze dried meals. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks

lots of options in the Lake Colden area.

Check out adirondackjourney.com for some excellent information.

On the far side of the lake there is a dam (if you are coming from the Loj). Take the right fork from the dam, (towards flowed lands) and there is an excellent leanto about 1/10th of a mile down the trail. This is our favorite spot to stay. Make sure you bring a bear container. Last June we went there, and we had our container, we hung a "dummy" bear bag with some smelly pots and pans (and a few rocks). We were visited. The furry fellow was HUGE. Have fun.
