I now live in KS and plan to return next month to hike around the Slide, Hunter and Big Indian areas. I have hiked 15 of the 3500's and would appreciate any suggestions for the best way to summitt from Peekamoose to Whitenberg (including all but Slide in between) in 1, 2 or even 4 one-day trips, as well as Sherill/Norh Dome and Double Top/Graham.

Thanks much,
Schatz

Do you need Lone, Rocky, BC, Friday? Those are the bushwacks and with an early start, good nav. skills, a likeness of spruce, and fleet of foot, you can do those in a day with an early start. Don't know how fast you are, but it is doable. You can backpack it but then you'll be pushing your way through with a large pack. The ridgeline past Friday brings you basically to Cornell...

Otherwise, you can go up and over Peekamoose, Table, and follow the Long Path basically, to the Curtis Ormsbee trail, head up slide and continue to Wittenberg (no 'h' :p)....

Of course, both options somewhat require a car spot or bike spot. (possibly a long drive or ride.

For normal people, we break up the 9 peaks around SCW as such:

Slide-Cornell-The Wittenburg. Out and back is tough, or spot a car. If neither of these options work, do Slide by itself, and the other 2 a different day. This avoids the huge drop in between S-C.

Peekamoose and Table from either end. It's a very short and easy distance between the two.

Balsam Cap and Friday from Moon Haw Road.

Lone and Rocky from Denning.

SH/ND - Start off Rt. 42 and do an out and back, or start off Spruceton Rd. and do it from the other end.

DT/GR - First, call Bill Scholl, 845-586-4056, and ask permission to hike the private property. (He is the care taker for Furlow Properties). It will be granted, and he will warn you that you hike at your own risk. There are a lot of options here. Start at Seager, start up towards BLM and use the old access road, start on the PH-WB Trail and whack over to DT, etc.

If you are really interested in the Catskills, do at least one of these things:

1) Join the Catskill 3500 Club. We lead hikes to all 35 peaks, about once per quarter.

2) Join our Yahoo! Group. (I am the moderator)

3) Check out the Catskill section of ADKHPs.
