Bonus: you can save money and weight and just wear normal pants, not zip-offs. If you get too hot, just ditch the pants all together and hike in the running shorts.
One of the advantages of zip-off leg pants is that the legs are designed to go over summer boots. (If I wear them with my winter boots, I just drop the legs into my gaiters.) Changing regular pants takes a lot longer.

EMS used to sell these pants called Camp 5. They are strechable and have good sized cargo pockets. I bought 4 pairs when they sold them. For some reason they stopped selling them but I still have all four pairs and all are still in good shape. I hike in those more than anything else.
