News release from Fish and Game:

Hiker dies on Caps Ridge Trail Mt. Jefferson

At approximately 7:56 AM Fish and Game dispatch received a call from 911 regarding a medical emergency on the Caps Ridge trail on Mt Jefferson in the unincorporated town of Lowe and Burbanks. It was reported that the subject was having a heart attack. The subject was identified as Rick Libby age 62 of Sanbornville New Hampshire. Twin Mountain Fire and EMS and Fish and Game Conservation Officers responded to this emergency. CPR was started almost immediately by his two friends that were hiking with him. A National Guard Helicopter was scrambled and responded. Paramedics arrived on scene and tried to revive Libby with no response. Emergency personnel stopped all efforts to revive Libby but the National Guard helicopter was able extract Libby and bring him to Littleton saving what would have been a difficult overland extraction.

I got there at 8h30. It happenned one mile up the trail at the first viewpoint on the big rounded boulders. There were three other people with the unconscious victim. CPR was being applied, the victim was kept warm with a sleeping bag, there was nothing I could bring to the group. We heard the sirens 20 minutes later. So the paramedics were probably there at a quarter past nine. The chopper showed up over Mt. Washington just before 10 then disapeared on the eastern side of Jefferson. It reapeared roughly 10 minutes later over the summit and descended the ridge. It was a sad note to an otherwise beautiful fall day in the presis.
