Location
Lake Katrine, NY, just inside the Catskill Blue L
Date Hiked: 6/12/08

Conditions: All trails and carriageways are in good shape. Paint blazes in the scrambles are fading, but the way through is generally easy to follow.

Special Required Equipment: Boots with good grip for the rock scrambles, Small day pack to be able to slip through the squeezes, Camera, $9 per person Mohonk Preserve visitor's fee (or free w/ preserve membership). Starting from the Mohonk Resort gatehouse is more expensive.

Comments: Round trip of about 10 miles, 1400' total elevation gain, 6 hours. An afternoon hike with many photo stops. The highlights were the rock scrambles (Humpty Dumpty, Giant's Workshop, and Cathedral Path). The Mountain Laurel was near full bloom, but with many buds also -- great photo ops.

Started from Spring Farm trailhead in the Mohonk Preserve. Bonticou Road with some shortcuts to North Lookout. Whitney, Tallman, and Reservoir Paths up to Skytop Road, past the Lily Pond to Skytop Tower. Started down the Skytop Path and cut across the Labyrinth to the Lake Shore Path. Down the Humpty Dumpty and Giant's Workshop scrambles (some nicely refrigerated crevice sections). Laurel Ledge Road, Plateau Path, then up the Cathedral Path scramble to Copes Lookout. Laurel Ledge Road, Sunset Path, Pine Hill, Mossy Brook Road, and then returned on Cedar Drive to Spring Farm. Short detour to the Million Dollar view of the Catskills at the crest of Spring Farm Road.
