Day 1: hike in, make camp up hellgate brook a bit.

Day 2: back track, right on linc brook, up owl's head slide, to the new summit, then bushwhack down the E slope to franc brook tr - ended up about 1/10th mi north of hellgate brook, not too bad for map + compass. Was supposed to rain, it didn't. Amen! Even had a rare sighting : Dave_Bear! Btw, we never saw the Moose, but we saw the to-mah-toe (sorry, that is how I was taught to say that word). Stev-o has the pic.

Day 3: garfield via 13 falls and back again. splendid views. saw one northbounder on garfield. Desalinated my body on the return at 13 falls. After this, i walked back to camp Hellgate, caught a glimpse of a bear crossing the trail, nice.

Day 4: red rock ravine fun and games. we whacked up the left side of red rock brook, catching an old logging road to the NE slide. up the slide, whacked to the twinway (brutal in spots), then left on the twinway. we were gonna hit SW Twin, but mentally we were cashed on bushwhacking. Considering the fine weather, we headed north to S. Twin, sucked in that delicious view for about an hour with no others on the summit, then down past the galehead hut, then twin brook down, etc to camp hellgate

Day 5: we decided to 'play in our backyard' - right out the back and headed into hellgate ravine. followed the brook mostly on the N side via old logging roads, which occasionally got nasty. lots of 'moose/bear herd paths' to follow. once around 3100', we headed N with a bearing pointing to W Bond, hoping to catch the bottom of that deep slide (the most westerly one). Looking at our watch, the clouds building, etc. we called it around 3500' and headed down. there is a REALLY nice section of white birch/firn that made for easy whacking up. And, the bear scat in there, TONS of it. We got back to camp just as the rain started... and man, did the rain come. Check out Jul 29/Jul 30 here: http://waterdata.usgs.gov/nwis/uv/?site_no=01074520&PARAmeter_cd=00065,00060,00062,72020 ... go 60 days back, this was the biggest 'flash' rain in 60d, it seems.

Day 6: exit from camp Hellgate. The 3x river crossings we did in the wilderness area were a challenge, but we managed all of them w/o getting water inside the boots nor taking boots off. And, franc brook/linc brook/ and the pemi were out of control raging from the rain the night before. Must have rained 4-6" (yes, INCHES) heavy heavy heavy from about 7pm until 4am....
