south turner is only around 1800 vertical feet i think, i did it the next day after hiking katahdin. the views are nice but in early to mid june it had the worst bugs in any place i have ever seen in my life. thousands flying around my head the whole way up. but there are a few ponds on the way that usually have some moose in them. the hike up to chimney pond is nice and level, you might gain 1500 feet, but it is over the distance of 3 or 4 miles i believe. the views there are the most spectacular though if you catch it on a nice day. might be punishment though if you can't hike to the top from there. like getting a gift but not being able to unwrap it. there is a pond on the way up, i think it might be mirror pond? but i caught it just as the sun was rising, and hamlin peak reflects directly into the pond like a mirror- quite beautiful
