12/17/2016 - South and Milddle Carter via 19MB, CDT, CMT and back

Trail Conditions: We hiked at the same time as everything was in the process of receiving 5" of new snow. From road to ridge, snowshoes were the best bet on several inches of loose heavy powder atop the base -- but most of the group opted for bare boots despite the lost energy. The route had its usual stretches of wetness -- a pain for the traction devices. Snowshoes on the ridge hands down. South Carter had some old tracks, but the stretch from South to Middle was completely unbroken before our travel on it (10"-15" depths). Once off the ridge, bareboots were the mode of choice, though we had a couple of snowshoe and MicroSpike holdouts.

From ground to ridge, temps were ~10F +/-, with howling 30mph gusts on the ridge. Despite the surly conditions including active snowfall, the scenery was still gorgeous, and the feedback from the group as that the had a great time on the adventure. Just 3 other parties out, all 1 or 2 people.

Special Equipment Required: Per above: Snowshoes.
