A pair of CD-ROMs glued together (both shiny sides out) makes a perfectly good rescue mirror. The small CD-ROMs should be fine too.

Do MP3's freeze up like some camera batteries?

I don't know about the flash memory ones, but the hard drive ones will die much faster when exposed to the cold. I usually keep my inside a chest pocket and that helps keep it warmer. It's usually a bit sweaty but no worse for wear, well yet.
