Dix, Hough, South Dix and East Dix

Sam, I see with the clear, dry weather you've got out quite a bit lately. Doing the whole Dix Range in one shot is quite a haul, especially adding in the road trip at the end. You must be getting close to finishing your winter round if you haven't already. Pvon

    Sewards route & camping questions

seward via Calkins Brook You are correct that Calkins Brook (CB) is the more traveled winter route for the Sewards. That said it isn't always travelled frequently so any new snowstorm(s) of significance would greatly affect a party of 2-3's success. As for campsites keep in mind the Blueberry...

    West Mill Brook parking?

Rt 9 Parking Just north of the trailhead sign is a pull-off parking area good for 5-6 vehicles. When I hiked the Dix Range two years ago from West Mill I used this approach. Its weird to begin and end a high peaks hike by walking through an underpass on the northway.

    Sewards

cross-over trail is shorter The cross-over saves one mile versus the traditional herdpath that drops lower to Calkins Brook. The "winter" route also saves about 400 feet elevation change by making the connection to the traditional herdpath at the 800 meter elevation. Hence it is the...

    Cascade Thursday instead of Friday

Previously, on my Seward thread, I announced a climb up Cascade for Friday, 12/31, to finish my winter 46. The rainy forcast has given me reason to move it up to Thursday, with an 11 am start from the Rt 73 trailhead. Sorry for the change in plans for anyone who had considered to join my...

    seward range dec. 22 ?

snowshoes were found Rik, what a great offer to retrieve my shoes. Winter hikers are the best folk! I received an email last night from Geoff H., from the Schenectady area, saying he and his brother brought out a set of shoes that fit my description. How kind is that? Its super and I...

Seward again but not for me yet Doc, I can't believe you're up for Seward with Wayne. Too bad you were under the weather Monday. Just in case you didn't notice my snowshoe saga/dilema...should you come across a mixed pair of snowshoes along the ridge please place them higher above the...

    seward range dec. 22 ?

tentative details for 12/27 Greetings everyone. Hope your Christmas was Merry! I'd rather not repeat myself like last wednesday when I couldn't catch up with the main group but history sometimes repeats itself. I expect to have snow covered roads on my drive to Corey's Road Monday morning...

    seward range dec. 22 ?

Coreytown Bob Run Expect hardpack glaze ice with tire ruts and a high center. Any powder snow will make it even more slick. 2WD will likely be problamatic. But you never know, maybe it all got washed out in Thursdays rain. Somehow I don't think that will be the case. Be careful or you'll...

    Seymour during open road season?

Seward Monday Sean, looks like I'm getting interest for another Seward attempt Monday, Dec. 27. Don't mean to hijack your thread-just gaging the interest for Seward on Monday. I'm still using my old thread for Seward. Pvon
