    Sleeping bag with pad

It’s a long story but I’m in the market for a 30 - 40 degree sleeping bag. Also, I’m tired of rolling off of my sleeping pad so I thought I’d investigate bags with a sleeve for a pad or some sort of method for attaching the pad. Any ideas? I’ve looked at Big Agnes but I haven’t found any others.

    Glencliff Trail

After all these years, I'm finally going to bag Moosilauke via the Glencliff Trail; where's the best place to park? Thanks.

    Parking for Liberty Springs

Can someone refresh my memory please? Where is the closest parking for Liberty Springs trail and tent site? I recall parking at the Lafayette Campground once but we were finishing at the Old Bridle Path. Maybe the Basin or Flume Visitor Center is the closest. Thanks.

    Spider ID?

After raising three girls, I was used to hearing "Eeeek, Daddy come and kill the spider!" This time it was my wife who said, "Duane, you might want to take a look at this spider." Since she isn't prone to exaggeration, I took a look very quickly. I've attached two pictures of the spider. The...

    Bird and tree reference books

I seem to be hiking slower these days. I'm sure that it's not age, it must be a change in gravitational pull or global warming. I'm paying greater attention to my surroundings, particularly birds and trees. Can anyone recommend guides that I can carry with me to help justify increasingly...

    Kayak venue and size

I'm planning on spending much more time flat water kayaking in NH, primarily in the Keene area but I probably won't be bringing my 12' Pungos with me. Any ideas on good rivers and lakes for putting in? The only place I've been on so far is the McDowell reservoir. Also, is it a good idea to get 9...

    Ice Climbing Boots

What is the climbing boot of choice these days? I'm currently wearing Koflach Expe boots which are like having anchors tied to my feet. I was thinking of moving on to a lighter weight leather boot that will still accomodate Black Diamond Cyborg crampons. Thanks. duane

    New Outback

Does anyone have any experience with putting kayaks or bikes on the roof of the new Outback? I've had no issues with older Outbacks or Foresters but the new Outback has a roof rack that looks questionable. A reviewer says this about it..." The integrated roof rack has cross rails that pivot to...

    Bug bites

I was hiking on Franconia Ridge and Garfield over the weekend and came away with dozens of itchy bug bites. They look like circular raised welts; most are less than 1/2 inch across although some are an inch across. Some have puncture marks in the center but I suspect that scratching may be the...

Water crossing on Liberty Springs Trail

The WMG mentions 'crossing a fairly large brook' while ascending the Liberty Springs Trail just past the Flume Slide Trail junction. Does anyone recollect how wide and deep this brook crossing is? The brook seems to be run-off from the Franconia Ridge but I can't tell from the map whether it can...

    Bike Week

How crazy is it to consider coming to the Whites during the last weekend of Bike Week? The current plan is to park around the Basin or Lafayette Campground on Friday morning and return to the car Sunday afternoon.

    09 Subaru Outback

Has anyone had any issues with Thule crossbars and Js on an 09 Outback with factory installed rails? I currently use the Thule system on a minivan and a Liberty for two 12 ft kayaks without any problems. My concern is that the crossbars will be too close together and that the Js won't be able to...

    Once in a lifetime visit

Someone on another thread raised an interesting point: the possibility that one will only visit a certain hiking destination once in a lifetime. In this case, the destination was the Grand Canyon but it could be the Rockies, Mt. Ranier, Peru, Nepal, Scottish Highlands and on & on. The...

    Kayak storage

Just bought two Duralite Pungo 120's. (Q: How do you get your spouse to agree to buy a kayak? A: Buy her one too!) My storage plan is to hang them on end in an unheated garage. Do you suppose the cold will harm the Duralite? Thanks.

    Tripoli Road

Since Townsie & I got a late start from Keene on Saturday, we decided to climb Mt. Tecumseh instead of going further north. Traveling along Tripoli Rd., we saw dozens of campsites mostly with multiple tents. Is there a map or description of campsites? Also, as we were heading down Tripoli Rd...

    4 day loop hike

Any comments on this 4 day loop hike in mid-May? Day 1 Crawford Notch west to Ethan Pond shelter via Mts. Tom, Field, and Willey; Day 2 to Nauman tentsite via Ethan Pond Trail, Webster Cliff Trail and Mts. Webster and Jackson; Day 3 to Dry River #3 shelter via Dry River Cutoff, Isolation and...

    Southern Presi Loop

How does this sound for a late May two day hike: From Crawford Notch, Crawford Path to Ike, then backtrack a bit, over Pierce to Nauman for the night. Day two, south on Webster Cliff to Mt. Jackson and down Webster Jackson Trail to Crawford Notch. I'd like to get over to Mt. Isolation but...

    Finger Lakes Trails

Can anyone recommend a loop trail in The Finger Lakes Region for a 4th of July backpacking trip? A group of six or eight of us from western Pennsylvania wants to find a remote trail (to avoid crowds) for a three day adventure. A strenuous trail is preferred although we won't be bringing climbing...

    cheep sleep

I’m planning on starting the Pemi Loop from Lincoln Woods in late Sept & I need a cheap place to spend the night before. I’m planning on the either the Hancock or Big Rock campground but since we’ll be arriving late I need an alternative. I suppose we could park overnight in the campground or...
