    Hiking the Baldfaces this weekend

It's been over 10 years since I've done the Baldfaces so I'm a little fuzzy on details. We're supposed to hike it tomorrow morning and the weather is saying a chance of rain. My concern is how difficult the ledges will be for a fairly new hiker and two dogs? If it's too difficult I'm thinking we...

Is the Mt Clinton Road parking lot plowed?

The forest service says the road is closed but I think the gate is after the parking lot. Do they plow the parking lot? I'm taking a group up there this Saturday and need to tell them to meet at the Clinton road lot or Highland center.

    Beginner winter hike suggestions.

Hello. I'm an experienced winter hiker but some friends I'm taking are new to it. I'm looking for some short but scenic hikes to take them on. We've done Welch Dickey which was easy but maybe too short. Chocora was about the limit of my friends abilities. We made it above treeline and got some...

Looking for suggestions for a 2 person 4 season tent.

I'm looking into getting a 2 person 4 season tent. Something I can put my dog in (a Lab) when I go winter camping. I have a Hilleberg Akto now which is great. It's really cramped trying to fit my dog in it though. I'd like to get a Hilleberg Nallo 2 but they're so expensive, $625! Does anyone...

    Old photo of Franconia Ridge

I posted this photo here years ago and it was determined it was Franconia Ridge. I can't find the old thread though? Does anyone know exactly where this photo was taken from? I'd like to go to the same spot and get a modern day photo. The stone wall might still be there. We're not completely...

Wildcats over the Wildcat Ridge Trail. 2-12-12

I went to park at the Glen Ellis falls trailhead but it's not plowed out. Ended up starting at Pinkham and hiking the Lost Pond trail to get to WRT. WRT is very steep and icy at the start. I put crampons on and left them on the entire day. My dog had no issue going up, I have no idea how he does...

    Flume trail info?

Does anyone know what the conditions are on the Flume trail? I plan on hiking in a few weeks. A few winters ago I hiked the trail it had an incredible amount of ice on it. I wished I had ice tools instead of an ice ax. I didn't get to the top of the slide until 5-6:00. It was fun though. :)

    Over mitts

After last weekends hike in -15F weather, I needs a better pair of mittens. I wear a medium-large fleece glove and would like an insulated mitten I can fit over it. Then I can pull the fleece glove out when I need finer control. Does anyone know what size mitt I would need? I went to REI today...

    Osceolas from Greeley Ponds trailhead

The trail was packed the entire way to the summit. It was icy most of the way, higher up there was some fluffy snow. Traction is required. I did the whole trip with stabilicers. Crampons would have been nicer on a few steep spots like the chimney but I made do with the stabilicers. My dog had no...

    Liberty Springs Trail

We hiked Mt. Liberty and Flume via the Liberty Springs trail. The trail was very icy the entire way. Typically I bare boot as much as I can but I needed my stabilicers this time. Full crampons would have been better because the ice was so hard.

Hiking in the winter with a Lab

Hi everyone. This is my first winter hiking in the Whites with my dog. He's a Labrador Retriever. We did local hikes in the park last winter and he loves it. He goes swimming when it's only 20F out! He'll break the ice, swim for a bit then come out with ice on his fur. That can't be healthy but...

Maps and Guides for the Green Mountains?

Hey everyone. This summer I'd like to take a week off and explore the Green Mountains in VT. I've never been there before and would like to camp where possible. The problem is I can't seem to find a good guide book or map for the area. I have the Day Hikers Guide to Vermont which is sparse on...

    RBH Designs VB clothes

Has anyone used RBH Designs VB vest or shirt? What's the quality and construction like? I have a pair of their VB socks which have been great but need to be replaced. They started wearing out after maybe 5 years of use. Their VB vest is expensive so I'd hate for it to wear out quickly.

    Weekend conditions guess?

I'm planning a trip up Mt. W this weekend. Any guess as to how the conditions may be? It sounds like there's been snow melting at all elevations. That combined with freezing temps this weekend will probably turn most trails into ice? What do you think?

Crawford Path to Mt. Eisenhower 1/3/09

I hiked up to Mt. Pierce and halfway to Ike before turning back due to the wind. It was brutally windy Saturday. The Crawford path is packed out solid. Some traction would be helpful, especially above treeline. Stabilicers would probably do fine. I used crampons above treeline and barebooted...

    Stove lighting problems.

I had a great hike this weekend (photos coming soon). Everything was good up until when I tried to light my stove in camp. My disposable lighter ran out of fluid first. Then I used my backup matches and I couldn't get a single match to light! I had them wrapped in a ziplock bag so water couldn't...

Dec 27th-28th overnight in the Presi's

I'm planning and overnight hike on the 27th-28th in the Presidentials. The current plan is up the Crawford path to the Naumen tentsite and up Ike the first day. The second day is back out to the car. Does anyone feel like joining? I drive up Rt 93 from the south shore of MA and can carpool...

Ethan Pond Tr. to Mt. Willey Dec13th-14th

I went on an overnight hike this weekend lead by an AMC leader. We went up the Ethan Pond trail to Mt. Willey, then back down to the Ethan Pond campsite for the night. I bare booted the entire hiked except when going down Mt. Willey, where I put on crampons. Traction is recommended, especially...

    I'm back for winter

Hello everyone. It's been a while since I was here. Now that it's winter I'm putting the bikes away and starting to hike again. Are there any winter hikers/campers here looking for another person to hike with? I used to do a lot of solo hiking and camping in the winter, but I'd like to find...

    Great Gulf river crossings?

I'm debating whether or not to cancel a trip this weekend... The trip is up the Great Gulf then Sphinx trail to Mt. Jefferson. How are the river crossings on those trails? I remember the great gulf has some suspension bridges?
