Hi, Read your post about Dix--Do I understand right that you went all the way up the main slide? If so, it's unconsolidated but doable? Thanks for any info, Pete Olander

    Best winter Sleeping PAD?

Memo on the pads... Thanks for all of the information--and schooling. Last night I slept out in the backyard using 2 cheapo closed-cells folded so that I had 3 layers under me from neck to thigh. My pack went under my calves and I cheated and used my home pillow under my head. Here in Albany...

    Best winter Sleeping PAD?

It's time for me to freeze again, so I thought I'd find out how everybody else does it--or avoids it. I've used self-inflators, closed cells, etc. with bad luck in Jan, Feb, March. I haven't tried combining the two yet--just heard about it. Are there any good 4 season closed cells that you've...

    Snow Totals

no snow None in Albany. I went to High Point in 1978 with my Dad who used to go there in the 30's with his scout troop. It was so windy that day we almost didn't make it to the monument. Cool place.

    Headlamp Input

Hey, Looking for opinions on the best headlamp. I've got a Black Diamond Gemini that I've used for a lot of night hikes but it just isn't great. I'm looking for something wicked powerful that's not going to crap out on me 4 hours into the hike. Any help appreciated. Pete O

A Rock Shoe for ADK Slide Climbing?

Thanks Approach Shoes Thanks for all the input. I bought a pair of 5 10 "Guide Tennies" approach shoes with their Stealth rubber. I never knew what approach shoes were or figured they'd be worth a darn on a slide. I like em already. Nice support and I got turf toe testing out the rubber on...

    Avalanche on Gothic's North Face

avalanche conditions I just read the post on Gothics--a day after I went up the Bennie's Brook slide. I was dimly aware of the possiblility of avalanche conditions and stayed aware as I walked/climbed up the left side of Bennie's. Fortunately I was OK and didn't have any avalanche problems...

    Whiteface

Sorrry for this belated reply. Tom's advice is on the mark as usual. There are several other short hikes that are popular because they are easily accessed. Cascade is one. It's only a couple miles. It's moderately steep with a cool open summit. It, like Whiteface, is subject to some wicked...

    11-18 Moss Cliff

bushwack Wow sounds like quite an outing. Like a page from Old Mountain Phelp's book. By the way, I'm the guy you showed the "chute" last winter on Pitchoff. (That was a nice ride down thru it!)

    Whiteface

As the trail report mentions, the woods were winter, the trail was not. As you cross the ridge at Marble, bam, the winter starts. It was a long six months. I scooped up a handful of snow and bathed in it, then ate a bunch from a hemlock. Great to be back in winter. I just wanted to say a word or...

North Fork of the Boquet and Cascade

10 to 15 years Can you imagine what Old Phelps would think of what we've done to the mountains?

North Fork of the Boquet and Cascade

Took a day and a half off for a two-part adventure into indolence. Parked on 73 and headed up the Boquet to the falls about a mile in. I was lucky to have from 9 to noon or so alone at the falls. I burned a roll of film in about 5 minutes, swam in 4 or 5 pools and napped in the sun. After...

    crampon bindings: Scottish or Modern?

Occasionally my crampons have twisted off to the left or right at the heel. Wondering if anyone would weigh in on the pros or cons of the newer loop- and-buckle style bindings of mountaineering crampons versus the old "Scottish style" strap binding system. I use the Scottish style bindings on...

Dix from 73 via the slide

This was the biggest and best slide that I've ever done. I would not do this one in summer. I would be soiling myself over in the cripplebush. The traction yesterday was excellent. Soft snow on top with hard base about 6" down. Even the ice was a little mushy making for great footing. As I...

    Bennie's Brook Slide again

I went back to Bennie's today to finish the lefthand slide I had stopped short on about a month ago. It was tons of fun and all that. There's a waterfall/icefall some 10 yards from the top. That was the only place I skirted into the bush. I popped back out on the other side of it and gingerly...
