Hey folks, it’s Wet with a new trip report. I went for a solo(http://s71.photobucket.com/albums/i...urrent=239a40c8.jpg&refPage=&imgAnch=imgAnch6) hike up Jefferson on Friday and by golly it was a fun day!!! So I work an odd schedule and just switched over from nights to day shift on Tuesday. This lead to me having a really funky sleep schedule, and when I randomly woke up at 4AM on Friday I decided to just go with it and start driving up (I had planned on getting up at like 6 or so). On the way up I was a little worried by the remaining low lying cloud cover on 93 (http://s71.photobucket.com/albums/i...ent=d84b1b04.jpg&refPage=40&imgAnch=imgAnch43). However, as the morning progressed my buddy BOB (big orange ball:http://s71.photobucket.com/albums/i...ent=5b5ab642.jpg&refPage=40&imgAnch=imgAnch42) started to burn through the clouds. As I got to the trailhead, BOB still hadn’t finished, but Bruce had assured me today would clear up, so even though I could not see the summit of Jefferson (http://s71.photobucket.com/albums/i...ent=ff1ca264.jpg&refPage=40&imgAnch=imgAnch41), I had faith it would clear up.

So Indi and I got an early start (http://s71.photobucket.com/albums/i...ent=13ba6c6c.jpg&refPage=20&imgAnch=imgAnch40) ; is it still a solo hike if you have your dog? We decided to go up the Castle trail to summit. Holy Franks and BEANS!!! Batman is this trail overgrown (http://s71.photobucket.com/albums/i...t=Picture011.jpg&refPage=20&imgAnch=imgAnch38) at the start. The first mile or so was really tough. The trail was overgrown, everything was wet, it was really humid with the clouds just clearing, there was no breeze and it was hot. Man, I was soaked through in minutes, and sucking wind. After a little while I started to gain some elevation and the breeze was a welcome relief (http://s71.photobucket.com/albums/i...ent=b38132e7.jpg&refPage=20&imgAnch=imgAnch33). As I was heading up I was hoping the clouds would continue to blow off of Adams (http://s71.photobucket.com/albums/i...ent=5c082e8c.jpg&refPage=20&imgAnch=imgAnch32).

My favorite part of this trail is the castles (http://s71.photobucket.com/albums/i...ent=8c027d80.jpg&refPage=20&imgAnch=imgAnch31) and crags (http://s71.photobucket.com/albums/i...ent=78a09911.jpg&refPage=20&imgAnch=imgAnch28) you climb over and through (http://s71.photobucket.com/albums/i...ent=2e5d951e.jpg&refPage=20&imgAnch=imgAnch30). With the summit still coated in clouds ( http://s71.photobucket.com/albums/i...ent=b2311758.jpg&refPage=20&imgAnch=imgAnch26) we took a short break, to enjoy the views (http://s71.photobucket.com/albums/i...ent=1b74261e.jpg&refPage=20&imgAnch=imgAnch25). Man being above tree line was great today. The wind was very refreshing, and cooled off the temp a lot. Here is a shot looking back down the trail from a little further up (http://s71.photobucket.com/albums/i...ent=e66cefb1.jpg&refPage=20&imgAnch=imgAnch24), and another (http://s71.photobucket.com/albums/i...ent=ee2ee6ec.jpg&refPage=20&imgAnch=imgAnch22). Here comes the clouds again (http://s71.photobucket.com/albums/i...ent=a6549e6b.jpg&refPage=20&imgAnch=imgAnch23). Finally made the summit (http://s71.photobucket.com/albums/i...rrent=c8ce2e05.jpg&refPage=&imgAnch=imgAnch20), and saw my first person of the day (http://s71.photobucket.com/albums/i...rrent=7f804d8d.jpg&refPage=&imgAnch=imgAnch19). The clouds came up for a greeting as well (http://s71.photobucket.com/albums/i...rrent=720a900d.jpg&refPage=&imgAnch=imgAnch18). Since I made good time going up Jefferson, I decided to summit Adams as well (http://s71.photobucket.com/albums/i...rrent=89f79792.jpg&refPage=&imgAnch=imgAnch14). I went over to Adams via the Gulfslides trail, here’s a shot looking over to the Castle Trail (http://s71.photobucket.com/albums/i...rrent=41b647f8.jpg&refPage=&imgAnch=imgAnch13). Here is a shot getting closer to Adams (http://s71.photobucket.com/albums/i...rrent=ad40d249.jpg&refPage=&imgAnch=imgAnch12) and then looking back at Jefferson (http://s71.photobucket.com/albums/i...rrent=74552860.jpg&refPage=&imgAnch=imgAnch10). I decided to go down the Airline trail (http://s71.photobucket.com/albums/i...urrent=e6e0c7a6.jpg&refPage=&imgAnch=imgAnch7). It’s a spectacular trail (http://s71.photobucket.com/albums/i...urrent=2da06b39.jpg&refPage=&imgAnch=imgAnch5) with great views and it’s a bit more gentle than the Castle trail ( http://s71.photobucket.com/albums/i...urrent=b61d3c1d.jpg&refPage=&imgAnch=imgAnch4).

The bottom part of Airline keeps going and going and going…WOW this trail felt like it took forever to finish. When I got back to Route 2 I learned a very important lesson. Don’t EVER even think of attempting to hitchhike with a dog…I figured someone with a pickup would be a good sport and lend me a ride 2-3 miles down the road to my car. I was wrong. Ok, I probably should not have even considered the idea, but I was feeling good, it was a nice day, and I though to myself, “self, I feel lucky today, I bet someone with a pickup or at the trailhead would give me a ride for like a mile or two”. I gave up after walking down the highway for a few and returned to the woods. Since I had planned on meeting some friends later in the evening I decided to just run for awhile down the railroad bed that parallel’s Route 2. Man was it hot (http://s71.photobucket.com/albums/i...urrent=6f9aebb6.jpg&refPage=&imgAnch=imgAnch3). The running didn’t last long on account of it being a million degree and me being tired. Also I think I was starting to see things so I went back to walking (http://s71.photobucket.com/albums/i...urrent=d5391db1.jpg&refPage=&imgAnch=imgAnch2 , http://s71.photobucket.com/albums/i...urrent=05e6d018.jpg&refPage=&imgAnch=imgAnch1). I got back to my car around 5:30 and headed for home.

What a good day. The scenery was awesome. The cloud cover really didn’t hamper me, it probably kept things cooler, and was neat to look at. Also one of my favorite things is the odd and weird way light looks through the clouds. I think it has something to do with the wavelengths that get through the clouds. It always seems to me that greens look more vibrant in the twilight like light, and everything looks more crisp. Though I do like sunshine, I seems like bluebird days wash out the details of stuff while your looking around. Either way, I will take any kind of day I can get on the peaks.

Hope you enjoyed my report.

DOH....The links didn't patch through. I'll re-link the pics :(

*Nother lesson learned, do not insert hyperlink text to word, then cut and paste into post bowser...

**Also, No one else seems to link there photo's into their trip report posts. They link all the pics at the bottom? Is there a rule or protocol on this? Am I not supposed to link tons of puctures throughout the post?

If you want images to show up inline you need to use the IMG tags. In general, posting a few isn't a bad idea, but posting huge amounts make the page load really slowly and is hard to read. 3-4 pics would be fine, 2 dozen would be overload.

Yeah, I didn;t mean posting the actual images in the narrative, cause that would take loads of bandwith if eveyone was doing it. I just ment why dosn;t anyone else link their images in the trip narrative? Does doing that just make me odd?

No, it doesnt make you odd :), it's just easier to put them all at the end.

So it's easier to read, just use the "insert hyperlink" tab above where you type your text (looks like planet earth), type the word to be used for the link, insert the url and there you have it. That way the text flows better and isnt interupted by picture URLs.

For example:

"Me and my girfriend took a nice hike through Zealand Notch this weekend to Thoreau Falls and up to the Zealand Mtn. summit via the Zeacliff and Twinway trails...." (Trip Report to come :) )

See how that works? Hope this helps....and glad you had a nice hike up Jefferson, makes me want to get back up there.

Ahhh. I used hyperlinks, when I typed the report in MS Word. They didn;t copy over when I pasted it here, so I thought I had to do the URL thingy. =)

Thanks for the help guys
