I'm planning a first time trip to Mt. Mansfield this weekend. Are there any campsites on the mountain? I understand that many people use Underhill State Park, but the website says it's closed this time of year.

Smuggler's Notch campground is in the area but that too, I believe, is closed after Columbus Day. See comments by Waumbek on Underhill State Park in this previous thread:

Campsites in VT

Are you car camping or backpacking? If you are backpacking, there is the Taft Lodge on the Long Trail below the Chin of Mt. Mansfield and Butler Lodge (via Butler Lodge trail) on the other (west) side.

Backpacking. So there is a camping area around Butlet Lodge? Are there camping fees?

Primitive camping rules in vermont

You can camp "anywhere" on Vermont state forests if you follow "primitive camping restrictons. They are:
-100 feet from any stream or body of water
- 1000 feet from any road
- limited to three consecutive nights
- burn only dead, downed trees
other practices consistent with low/no impact camping.

See the Vermont State Parks website for the complete regs.
Have fun!
