My son and I hiked the Kinsmans yesterday, and I noticed what I think is glacial striae just as you pass the caretaker's tent, before you get to the new shelter. What do you think?
Any glacial geologists out there? Dr. D?

IANAG, but those look like weathered fractures, rather then glacial striations.

HERE are some striations.

Nice looking shelter!

Hard to tell from the photos, but I agree with both comments from David and BCSkier. Typically the hard bedrock in the Whites takes on a glacial polish, with some times glacial grooves, which may be the case in your photos, but not usually striations as shown in David's photo, which appears to be soft bedrock, perhaps from the Canadian Rockies? Also, as BCSkier's photo indicates, icesheet flow indicators in the Whites (we think that continental ice covered our highest summits during the last glaciation) are usually NNW-SSE, except in topographic situations where bedrock controls iceflow. But, thanks for posting, and I will definitely check out these features next time I am in the neighborhood. :)
