A section of the AT passes Benedict Pond, which is accessible from the GB to Monterey Road (VERY close to New Marlborough). It's a great place to combine swimming & hiking - there's also a campsite on the edge of the Pond.

When I camped in Beartown S.F. once, I took a trip to Stockbridge and we hiked up to Laura's Lookout just south of downtown. It's a really short and easy hike but has a nice tower on the top with a marked chart that you can look at and sight landmarks if the weather is good. Nothing to spend more than a few hours but if you have a few hours to kill, it's nice and Stockbridge is a neat little town (Norman Rockwell Musuem, etc..)
