Waltham, MA Jazzbo & Marty meet Bigfoot on Kenne
AMC New Hampshire chapter hike. A congenial group of 7 that included Bill, Rick, Karen, Jean, Vinny, Kevin, and myself maintained a blistering pace of 1/hr.

We were fortunate to find ourselves observing this Veteran’s day hiking with Bill Bowden an army vet who served in Vietnam. Bill learned his map & compass skills the hard way spotting for artillary. This writer tips his hat and offers sincere thanks to Bill for his service to our country and his continuing spirit of public service for his work as an excursions leader with AMC NH chapter.

Snow line was in retreat as warm temps and rain during the preceding days have melted a lot of snow that the mountains had been building prior to this. Didn't start seeing snow until well over 3000'. Snow was only 6" and wet at 4000'. Snow on trails was packed and wet and spotty. Conditions were typical for a warm day in late spring or fall. The bog bridges on the trails between Jackson and Pierce have packed wet slippery snow that makes it easy to slip off and into the bogs. Somebody needs to snow shovel them.

We were treated to splendid views of Presidentials on this unexpectedly sunny day with just enough clouds to lend dramatic interest to the views. From our point of view the snow cover on the Presidentials was beginning to look spotty, but still looked grand.

It was windy in the Notch at the Crawford Path trailhead. Wind gusts continued to be heard overhead as we ascended the Crawford Path. Pausing below the summit to layer up, Bill puts on his brand new Windstopper soft shell jacket which all agree he looks marvelous in. A few minutes later on the summit, the wind dies down to practically nothing. We said "Wow! That Windstopper soft shell really works!!!" :D

Traction was brought and much discussed but never used.
