Conditions: Thoroughly broken out from Big Rock Campground straight up to E. West Scar via the crest of the nearest northerly ridge, then to W.West Scar. Pretty solid packed powder surface atop 3-6 feet of snow. Solid snow bridges across the Hancock Branch.
Gear: Without snowshoes, you will post hole, seriously deeply. On the summit ridge, you will sometimes fall through, even with large snowshoes and/or tail extensions. Eye protection recommended - lots of spruce boughs and twigs to fend off.
Comment: Need this notorious NEHH peak? Want it on a sliver platter? It's waiting for you! Six dedicated AMC pioneers broke through 1-4 feet of medium-heavy, partially consolidated snow and powder to 3380' on Saturday. A larger group of 17 AMCers finished the job on Sunday, complete with swimming over/burrowing under/punching through 8-12 foot monster drifts on the high ridge to reach W. West Scar.
