I've been using the Smartwool Mountaineering Extra Heavy Mid Calf for several years..They are amazing..A couple of years back I ran into a good sale..might have been REI.. and bought 10 pair..all the same color and style..and culled out the old sock drawer so now i can reach in and have a good chance of getting 2 socks that match...use year round..work or play..headed off to work with a pair on now....hard to beat

For extreme cold days I do have a couple of pair of Expedition Weight..they say Bean on them but look like Smartwools...very warm

Yep, Me too! When the Wal-Martians opened their "mother ship" in Epping, these were on the shelf. I bought a pair and immediately went back fo another. When they discovered that they were actually selling a decent product, they marked the remaining stock down and discontinued the item. It was a double edged sword; I got 6 pairs for half price but after that they were no more. I still wear them daily. It's going to hurt to replace them.

Smartwool, mulesing, and Primaloft

I have been a vegetarian for almost 30 years, but have taken a lot of flak like "well, you eat fish and wear Smartwool socks, don't you?" But, that guilt trip will be partially over if Smartwool succeeds in ending mulesing, the inhumane process of obtaining merino wool. Also, I am hoping that Primaloft can be successfully used for socks; their CEO tells me that they are really comfortable around the office, but I am not sure how they will perform in boots on the trail.
