I just ordered the large, wide Ridgerest to go under my large, wide Thermarest.

Maybe you produce a lot more heat than your son? :)

Old white ensolite also becomes brittle and breaks into many pieces at -20F. (Green does better, but either is much heavier than modern closed cell foam.)

I use one of those green/purple ridgerests -- they're a bit thicker than the standard rr. I've stepped on it with crampons before, so I don't think I'd want to depend on a thermarest.
