    Wright - 10/11/2008

Trail from ADK Loj was wet in many places with lots of running water up near the waterfall and turnoff for Wright. No snow or ice to be found anywhere. Weather conditions were great on Saturday. Nicely cool start (upper 30's) warming throughout the day. Summit was chilly with a nice stiff...

    Marcy & 2 new 46Rs - 8/16

My son and I finished our journey and challenge of the Adirondack 46 high peaks yesterday afternoon on Marcy. We hugged each other at the summit and reflected on past hikes and our time together. We have real admiration and respect for all those who have accomplished the same status since we...

    Haystack - 7/26

Trail from the Garden to JBL was wet and muddy, but not as bad as we had feared given all the recent rain. From JBL up to Slant Rock was quite muddy, but again not too bad and easily navigated. From Slant Rock up the trails were quite wet with lots of running water and loose rock. Bugs were not...

    Allen 7/4/08

ADK Hiker, Thanks again for sharing the trail with my son and I. You were great company on a memorable hike. You weren't alone in falling on the red slime. It got me as well. :(

    Allen - July 4

#44 for my son and I! This long hike was made more difficult by the wet conditions from all of the recent rain. The grassy areas of the trail was very wet and thoroughly soaked our feet. The Opalescent River crossing was very easy to find and manage. The water was swift and cold in the middle...

    Marshall ???

Yvon, my son and I hiked Marshall last summer. The herd path makes its way primarily on the right side of Herbert Brook, but we found that at times it was easier just to stay in the brook. There was plenty of rock surface to hike on which provided a nice quick ascent. Best of luck on your...

    Colden - 5/26

Hiked Colden from the ADK Log. Ascent via Avalanche Pass/Lake Colden. Descent via Lake Arnold. The trails from the Log to Avalance Pass were wet in spots, but not much mud to deal with. We encountered a bit of snow and ice in Avalance Pass that was easily barebootable. The ascent up Colden from...

Allen Bridge over Opalescent is out

Allen is one of the 4 that I need as well. Hoping to finish this summer! Just may have to wade across on this one. I certainly won't let a little bit of water stand in my way.

    Whiteface - Toll Road

Date of Hike: Dec 26, 2007 Trail Conditions: The toll road was nicely hard packed. Easily barebooted or skied. Trail above the toll road was wind blown and deep in spots. We lost the trail a bit on the way down and found a few spruce traps. Special Equipment Required: Snowshoes or skis...

    Cliff and Redfield? And Marshall?

1ADAM12 has it right on. The Marshall herd path is at Herbert Brook between Flowed Lands and Lake Colden dam. The second cairn at Uphill lean-to is the start of the Redfield path and can be used for both Redfield and Cliff. For Cliff, follow the Redfield path for about 5 minutes or so. Shortly...

First time hiking the 'Daks... need some help

There is a nice small waterfall on your way up Algonquin as well. It is below the junction with Wright Peak and there is a nice camping spot just before the falls.

    Leaky hydration units.

Camelback I've been using a Camelback for a few years now with no bladder leakage. The only area that I have seen leakage is from the on/off valve. I noticed a small crack in the valve that caused it to leak. A quick replacement and it was good as new.

    HOT,HAZY & HUMID this weekend

Earlier start works for me. I like to get most of my climbing done before it gets too hot. I usually try to hit the trailhead at first light or even earlier sometimes. As an added bonus I tend to summit well before others show up. I also use the 'Clint Eastwood Trick' that was mentioned earlier...

    hiking poles on flights?

Packed in checked baggage has worked for me. Recently took mine on a trip to Arizona for a hike into the Grand Canyon. Had no problems whatsoever. I just collapsed them down and put them right in my suitcase.

Trekking poles, use or use not?

I used to use 2 trekking poles on all hikes. I broke one a few years ago and have been using just 1 ever since. I find that I prefer to use just 1. I get the benefit of having a pole for balance, easing descent, etc, but also still have one free hand all the time. 1 works best for me.

    Dix Range

There have been several threads related to this route here and on other forums. Most people tend to feel that it is best to hike up the Macomb slide first when you are fresh rather than waiting until the end when you are tired and it may be dark. Last summer my son and I made the hike and we...
