From time to time the american alpine journal has published findings from research expeditions in this area... check out 1982's issue "American Medical Research Expedition to Everest" I am sure the material is a little dated, but interesting nonetheless.

1984's issue discussess oxygenless climbs and barometric pressure relevance...

THere is quite a bit of reading if one is interested.

Didn't Breashears and Viesters already do this for NOVA in 1997?

Don't forget that there are many aspects to study.

My only objection to the link in the original post was that it was written as if no one else had done similar research.

It all depends on the biomarkers/endpoints being measured. They do indicate that this is for translation to hypoxic effects on ICU patients. However, they do not indicate what analytes in the blood will be measured.

Science is very specific and for funding to go justified, the research must be novel and important.

The media has to make a big deal out of everything anyway

If you want to participate in High Altitude Research go climb Denali via the West Buttress. Many years at the '14000 camp researchers will be looking for volunteers to give blood samples and other bodilly fluids for analyzation. Kind of interesting being a Human pin cushion that far from the beach.
