Universal rule
I think it would be a greater act of kindness to retrieve it and contact SAR to return it to him. They must have his contact info. After what he has been through I bet he would really be grateful that someone cared enough to do that for him.
As Rolling Rock shared, he might have been carrying that weight for training purposes.
