Have fun! I plan to be hanging at one of those pull-offs on the Kanc. If you have any other ideas on where the darkest place is, please let me know.
This shower lasts a long time, so any night of the next few is good.

The Kanc sounds like a great place! The summit of Balsam Lake Mountain (which is open) is awesome for star gazing!

Direction of Viewing?

I am finding that looking southeast is the best way to view the shower. Am I correct? I am also trying to find the best pulloff on the Kanc. Maybe somewhere close to the Pass, if it is indeed the Southeast direction that I want to be facing?

Every meteor shower is different, but in general, you want to be laying down or in a reclining chair with your feet pointing at the constellation where the meteors are coming from, in this case Orion. The meteors will shoot out in every direction all over the sky, but focusing on their source usually works the best.

The placement of Orion will depend on what time you are observing. The best time for most meteor showers is 2-3 hours before it starts getting light out. Given that you will be observing tomorrow morning at 3, Orion will be in the South East, slowly drifting towards the South.

The Geminids in December are a notable exception. They can be watched all night long! :D

I saw 3 or 4 "shooting stars" on my drive into work this morning at 3:30 AM looking East/Southeast. I figured there must be some sort of "event" taking place. The sky was amazingly clear in the wake of that front that pushed through yesterday.

Thanks for the post.

In Retrospect...

...I apologize for the post being off topic. I suppose meteor showers don't really have much to do with hiking, but there has got to be some correlation. Either way, hope every stays warm tonight.

It's not a problem. It is related to hiking for sure. There is another thread that a few of us resurrect from time to time, that really needs to be renamed.
