Pitcher Mountain is a close to home gem location that I visit every couple months and enjoy the experience more and more with each visit. Today's hike wasn't about the summit firetower or sweeping panoramic views but about getting my two toddlers (3 years, and 18 months) on an outdoor adventure. We've spent hours at a time outdoors building snowmen or sledding but this was also a learning experience for myself without the security blanket of a 70 degree house a few steps away.
The 0.6 mile fire road has a very gradual incline with a short final rocky pitch to the fire tower.
The summit offered spectacular views of Monadnock, Ascutney and other nearby hills but we only stayed long enough to snap a quick picture or two due to the chilly winds.
On descent I taught the kids the fundamentals of a quality butt slide.
I needed to carry my 18 month old most of the way because he looked like Ralphie's little brother (A Christmas Story) wearing a snowsuit he could barely walk in and my Daughter excitedly ran (that's right ran) most of the way.
Round trip was just under 1 hour.
