I'm not aware of any snow avalanches having occurred at that spot. (But it can be a bad area in which to fall...) It is on the west side of the ridge--the prevailing westerlies tend to blow the snow over to the other side. However, this storm is predicted to begin with easterly winds swinging around to the N and NNW as the storm progresses so there might be significant deposition on the upper part of the trail.Interesting - I was originally planning to head up to Franconia Ridge on Sunday. I haven't heard of it sliding but I can imagine the area between the hut and Lafayette could, under the right conditions, be prone to slide. Anyone remember it sliding? What are the chances? Where else, outside the Presidential ravines and slides, might be susceptible given current conditions?
About 4" in Brookline (MA ) of heavy stuff ... temperature at Logan has been on either side of freezing (mainly just above) all day.
... Now maybe 5 inches, rather heavy. Will get cooler overnight so the snow will be more fluffy in the morning, I hope.
I saw that there were gusting winds of 69 mph in Newburyport MA! Here in Cambridge MA strong blowing winds and constant snow. Now maybe 5 inches, rather heavy. Will get cooler overnight so the snow will be more fluffy in the morning, I hope. I stand happily corrected from my earlier skepticism. If things keep up like this all night--light snow but falling fast and steadily--we'll have some big accumulations by tomorrow.
