    North Crocker Elevation

Curious... Sign on the summit of North Crocker reads 4,168'. My altimeter read 4,160' the other day. I've seen a number of sources, including AMC 4000er Club, list the elevation as 4228'. 4,168' or 4228'? Which is it? Any ideas why the discrepancy?

    Success Pond Road

Anyone out there have any info on Success Pond Road? Will any of us have any success reaching any of the trailheads along this road this season? We're hoping to use the Goose Eye Trail to break up this section of the AT (Route 2 to Grafton Notch SP) into two overnighters. (Work schedules limit...

Has anyone been to Mt. Desert Island recently? Thinking about ski/snowshoe action adventure excursion this weekend. Appreciate any info. THANKS

    Bladder in the Freezer?

In the Gatorade thread, I noticed that a couple people mentioned putting their hydration bladders in the freezer after each use. I'm assuming this is a way to keep it from getting green and fuzzy. Does this really work? Don't you still need to clean it? Otherwise it seems to me the creepy...

    Pack Sizes

I have a pack that is about 10 years old. I'm trying to determine its size. Is there a "best way" to measure it? Better yet, is there an online resource that has the size of every pack ever made? FWIW, it's an LL Bean pack, day pack size. I believe it's call the Tuckerman pack.

    Neos Overshoes

I have notoriously difficult feet to fit. This point was reinforced the other day at LL Bean where I tried on every type of snowshoeing/insulated boot they had. None fit. I have a pair of hiking boots that fit quite well. I was thinking that Neos Overshoes would work well for snowshoeing. Does...

Mtn Biking vs. XC skiing 4k's.

The thread about mountain biking a piece of the trail got me thinking. If mountain biking a piece of the trail disqualifies that hike from being an official 4ker, why doesn't cross country skiing a piece of the trail also disqualify the peak? (Correct me if I'm wrong, if it does. This would mean...

    Camping on the Kanc

Looking for any input on the many campgrounds along the sunny and scenic Kancamangus Highway. I'll have a group of 5 for one night in late June. Here are the questions: 1. How early should we arrive to reserve a site? 2. Can I assume that 5 people can fit (2 tents...maybe 3) at one site? 3. Any...

    Canoe Camping

Since it only hurts when I walk, I'm thinking about trying paddling as a new way to explore the wilds of New England. This will hopefully satisfy our need to get out and play while I am on the mend. Anyone have any suggestions for two "semi-professional" backpackers, who looking to make the...

    An Inconvenient Truth

Just a little something to brigthen your day: http://www.climatecrisis.net/ Be sure to watch the trailer. Since we all like to play outside, I figured there might be some interest out there. Or interest to get out there before things get too crispy.

    Gear Rental - Portland, ME

A friend of mine is looking to rent a cold weather sleeping bag next weekend. Any one know of any where in the Portland area that rents gear? (She checked EMS, and one is set to be returned the morning she leaves - might not work.) THANKS!

    At 05

So, what do you do when you sell your house and quit your job? Hike the AT, of course! Danielle (whom you will recognize from this board as "Danielle") and I are setting off on our thru-hike at the end of March. We've been planning and prepping frantically over the last couple months (with a...

    Zipperless Sleeping Bag

Anyone out there have any experience with a zipperless sleeping bag? I'm thinking about a new summer bag, and weighing the pros & cons. Two models I've looked at: http://www.backcountry.com/store/TNF0577.html?cat_id=3&subcat_id=18...

    The foggy Bonds

Our Bonds curse continued with another foggy excursion the Pemi. Our most sincere apologies to anyone who plans a trip to the Bonds the same time we do. In any event, we had a great weekend in the woods: Day 1 - Wilderness Trail to Thoreau Falls Trail to mystery campsite off the Ethan Pond...

    "Flat" Trails

OK, so I hurt myself again. Sprained ankle while running a couple weeks ago. Looking to do some kind of backpacking trip over Labor Day weekend. (Because if I don't get out soon I'll go crazy.) Any suggestions for "flat" trails in the Whites? (That's funny.) By "flat", I mean not rough...

    Kingfield, ME Camping

Heading to the Kingfield metropolis this weekend for a wedding. We have lodging for Friday and Saturday night, but we're looking for a place to camp on Thursday night. Any suggestions? We'll be arriving late, so we'd love a place that is either a short hike or we can park at. Nothing fancy...

    Tahoe & Yosemite

Back from a great trip...well, we've been back for awhile, but going on vacation never bodes well for a return to work. In any event, here's a brief recap of our adventures in California: Day 1: Fly to Reno, Drive to Tahoe. Go for run immediately upon arrival. Welcome to 6,200'! Definitely...

    Yosemite

Danielle and I are headed to Yosemite for about a week in mid-July. (Granted, the timing isn't the best for crowds and heat, but we're piggybacking onto a trip to Tahoe for a friend's wedding.) We have already made reservations for 3 nights at Crane Flats and 3 nights at Tuolumne Meadows...

Baxter State Park - Memorial Day Wknd

Baxter State Park, May 28-31, 2004 Our trip to Baxter State Park in Maine began with the usual car-full of stuff that we just hoped had everything we would need. It never does, but we always seem to pack plenty of stuff we never touch. For example, I brought one pair of heavy socks, but 3...

    Fort Mountain bushwhack

For a duo (Danielle and I) with relatively little bushwhacking experience, (i.e. none) can all you experienced whackers out there, rate this bushwhack in terms of difficulty? The route finding was easy, but crashing through the trees and blowdowns was less than pleasant. (Granted, it was wet...
