The ways of the USFS are indeed mysterious but I don't think they'll be opening WMNF forest roads for at least several weeks, possibly as late as mid-May. For one, there's likely to be more snow at higher elevations. Many of the forest roads are still covered with snow and ice anyway. Those that aren't are mud sinks, and driving on them in soft conditions only makes them worse. You can think of them as "posted," as are most of the regular smaller paved state roads here now. Jeff Notch Road is not officially gated but take a look at the "Jeff Notch Road" thread on this forum to get an idea of conditions--and of prices for the Lowes's monster tow truck to suck out a vehicle from the mud. Looks like it's running about $750 these days.
