Where is this Index rock that is in so many avatars?

It's about 2/3 of the way up the Dudley Trail from Chimney Pond to Pamola Peak in Baxter State Park.

Is it also referred to as the Knife's Edge?

Index rock is seperate from the knifes edge. It is just a very distinct rock on the side of the trail on the way down from Pamola peak to Chimney pond. Many folks have discovered that it is a lot easy to climb up on then to climb down off of.

Thanks, everyone. It looks rather dwarfed in Spencer's picture. Those mountains are massive rock piles it seems.

Knife Edge does seem to be just that. It's like hiking across a humongous pile of boulders. I've enjoyed hiking that section of trail more than any other. Check it out sometime, if you ever get the chance and feel you're up to it and don't get vertigo too bad.

I never heard it called Index Rock. Only name I ever heard was Panmola's finger.

BTW - It is called Index Rock in the Stephen Clark guild book, but while I was in Baxter I heard it called both names.
