Well, the spring beauty is out in force along riverbanks in SE NH. None of it was open today by the time I got there, but still a pretty flower.

Other Reports:

Helebore is in full leaf in spots, skunk cabbage is unfirling, wild oats are a few days away, and the trout lillies are in leaf, but no flowers.

On a side note: Does anyone know any bloodroot locations in Southern or central NH that I can hit next week. It's a tough flower for me to find. I'll take PM's if you don't want to post...

Thanks! And great to see the reports coming in!

I was in CT yesterday (near Hartford) without my camera but saw tons of a white flower that I didn't recognize, but which I think was bloodroot. By leaf shape I figured it was in the buttercup family, so my first guess was some kind of anemone, but Google image search leads me to think bloodroot is a better match. Some had a large drooping bud with no leaves visible (buried under the leaf litter, or absent). It was on a shallow slope formed by a small basaltic trapp ridge, beside a damp area (typical New England wood / vernal pool: skunk cabbage, maples, etc). A bit of a drive from NH, I'm afraid, but very similar soil extends through the Connecticut River valley into at least central Massachusetts, so you might have some luck there as the weather warms.

Also bluets, trout lily, skunk cabbage, several species of fern.

Maryland Spring Flower Hike

On April 19th my wife and I took a 5.6 mile circuit hike along the Little Gunpowder river bordering on the Harford and Baltimore County line.
Along with a turtle, snake and herd of white tail deer we saw many blooming wildflowers carpeting the forest.
Here are some photos:

Some trails are a bounty of beauty as was today's:

Hepatica (buds, purple, white, and numerous clusters)

Purple Trillium

Early Saxifrage

Yellow Violet

Trailing Arbutus (pink and white)

Silverling (starting to green up and with last year flower)

Some buds (Clintonia most likely)

Some mystery buds I'll have to go back and check out (for size and up close)

Edited to add that these are Indian Poke shoots (aka False Hellebore)

This bud on the left was taken on a previous April (end of month) and I hope to find it again but this time see what the flower is. Any ideas?

Carole, great stuff, and very useful! No help immediately on the buds, but I'll dig around.

Would you mind posting a general location so we know how far north spring has made it?

Thanks in advance!

Really nice, all. A great time to be in the mountains with the emerging beauty.

I went to pawtuckaway this morning. With the heat, the season seems to be compressing a bit. I saw a few hepatica still, but also saw saxifrage in bloom as well as a columbine red and blooming.

Also stopped by a stream and saw colts foot and trailing arbutus, as well as spring beauty. Odd morning...

Oh, and the blackflies like the heat too...uuuuhhhggh. Black cloud around me the whole time!

I also saw Bellwort, and this which I know I know, but can't place without the flowers...anybody know what this is?

sorry for the bad photo.....

Well, I just got back from a tour through Bristol, Groton and Rumney, and found lots of flowers. Violets of assorted variety, anemone and red trilliums were all in bloom, but no pictures. Clintonia was in bud already at sculptured rocks. Trout lillies were everywhere.

I finally found some dutchman's breeches and bloodroot today, thanks to some tips from people here on the forums. Thanks so much for all your help...

Photos...too windy to really try for plants I have already, but will be shooting more soon. So just focused on the bloodroot and the dutchmans...

Beautiful shots! The Bloodroot has to be my favorite of our native flowers. Glad you were able to find your quarry.

mmmm...

Dinner is served! They are more appetizing after the scales are removed...

Another fern, same day/place, Cinnamon, I think. Looks disturbingly like the photographer from the same angle.
