It would be interesting to see what zany scheme he'd use to get around the H-13's 450-km range and 5000-meter ceiling...

Hardly anybody climbs McKinley without a flight in

I meant the way it was phrased it sounded like he'd plant the flag with the helicopter (impossible, of course, to fly one that high, but that's beside the point).

That's exactly how he planned to do it. I'll try to dig up the exact quote tonight. It's a single line in the book, not a big deal, but it meant something to the guy in charge of the shelter crew.

There was an old DOC cabin on the spot, many years ago. The shelter was built in the 70's, so the cabin dates from the 40's I think.

David,
I think the chimney may be older and from the original house that was there (before the cabin). Do you know if that is true? I remember seeing a house/cabin up there around 1973 or 74. Does anyone know when was the DOC cabin built?

Here is the sewing machine in the woods just above the cabin:

Impressive, but it was basically an advertising stunt (May 14, 2005)...
The machine was stripped down, one pilot, minimal fuel, etc (all to minimize the weight), and in ideal conditions. It does not indicate that one can actually do anything useful at that altitude.
